The next day, Anas woke up early due to the chest pain. He met Al, who was carrying a huge load of paper in the hallway.
"What's all of this?" Anas asked curiously.
"It's all the letters you, Rai and Raina received from the scouts," Al replied. This news made Anas flinched.
"Oh my angels, leave the letters in my studies, I need to wash up first," Anas said as he walked, still half asleep.
In the bathroom, he brushed his teeth and replaced his bandages with new ones. He clenched a towel in his mouth as he slowly removed the old ones. For most people at his age, this kind of pain would leave them screaming and bursting into tears, but for Anas, it felt like a bee was stinging wherever he touched.
Just as he was finished and going to his studies, Al brought in Nex, Karasu and Echo, who all had their own stacks of letters.
"How long would this take?" Nex shouted from downstairs.
"Uh, depends. If it's 100 letters each, maybe 2 to 3 hours," Anas replied. This task was going to be tedious for them.
"Let's divide them by agency and work our way through," Anas told them.
"But why do we need to do this?" Echo asked.
"Because we need to reply to their letters. If we didn't, we could get fined for every letter ignored," Anas replied.
"How are we going to separate them?" Karasu asked.
"Look at the emblem on the sticker, each has their own emblem, so we would know who sent the letter," Anas explained.
"Mine is the longest, so let's start with mine first. After we sorted all of them out, you can put yours on top of the respective letter and mark it down on the board back there," Anas continued.
He laid down all the letters and the numbers truly left him bewildered. Out of the 357 agencies which attended the Starfall Crown, 354 agencies sent a letter.
"Yeah, good luck with writing all of those letters," Nex said as he laughed.
The three boys slowly sorted their own letters for almost 3 hours, by the time they all have finished, Anas wrote 350 reply letters.
"What are you? A printer?" Karasu asked.
"I mean you'll get used to writing letters as a noble," Anas replied with a smile.
"By the way, out of all the letters, this is the only one that used black paper," Echo said as he held the letter.
"That's the top agency in the world, the Rising Sun. It has 24 diamond ranked mages and even prince Drake is a part of the group," Anas explained.
"Damn, we are missing out on a lot," Echo commented.
"Not really, they have strict rules, all agencies do and they pay less to new members, no matter the rank. Unless we are a part of it for 2 years, our income is basically nothing. Us starting out from square one is much better in the long run. And although 30% of what we find goes to principal Agnus, 70% for the 4 of us is plenty and we also have a friend who is in a mercenary group, so we can learn from him," Anas explained.
"The whole thing is a mess," Nex commented.
"That's why a handful of now mages try creating a mercenary group before try joining an agency," Anas continued.
Just as he finished explaining, he finished writing every letter.
"Good luck writing, slowpokes," Anas said as he headed off.
"God, this is going to take forever," Echo complained.
"Hey, this is the first time we are in his studies," Karasu said.
"Yeah you're right, but it's just filled with boring books and stacks of paper in the corner," Nex replied.
"I mean, it wouldn't hurt to look at those papers," Echo said as he picked up a piece of paper.
"What the fuck is this? It isn't human writing," Echo said as he showed the paper to Karasu and Nex.
"It looks like research, you know how he is," Nex replied.
Echo continued to flip through paper after paper, with each sheet making him even more confused.
"Maybe you're just too stupid to understand," Karasu said.
"No no, this is not his writing. It has to be something else," Echo exclaimed.
"Well, all three of us combined wouldn't figure it out anyways, so let's just focus on writing these letters," Nex told Echo and he hesitantly agreed.
Time went by in silence until Rai and Raina came to the studies.
"Ugh paperwork, so boring. Echo, do them for me," Rai commanded.
"Yeah right, just ask your boyfriend to do it," Echo replied.
"Boo, you suck," Rai said, but Echo couldn't care less.
"It's not that hard. I have written plenty of words in my life," Raina said as she rolled up her sleeves. She only had less than 100 letters, so she finished sorting in half an hour.
"Wait, remember to mark down which ones you have," Karasu reminded Raina.
"No, I'll be fine. I have photographic memory. I basically remember everything," Raina replied.
Rai was still sorting. Although she started at the same time as Raina, she only sorted out 20 letters, so Raina decided to help her before starting to write.
After a few more minutes,
"Done! Now what?" Karasu asked, but everyone in the room also had no idea.
"What is taking Anas so long?" Nex questioned.
Just then, Anas came back to his studies.
"Looking for me?" Anas said.
"What took you fiveever to get here?" Karasu asked.
"Well, before I sent the letters to the post office, I met a special someone," Anas replied as he moved aside and principal Agnus showed up.
"Why is she here?" Nex asked.
"To help you out," principal Agnus replied as she used gravity to float all of the letters, the board and all the reply letters and crushed them all into a small ball of paper.
"What was that for?" Echo asked in frustration.
"Calm down, she already talked to every agency and... made sure they understood that we are going to be a part of a mercenary group for her," Anas replied.
"Why did you have a pause there?" Echo asked, but Anas didn't answer.
"Oh yeah, I want to ask what is that stack of paper in the corner," Karasu said to Anas.
"Old formulas for an attack," Anas replied.
"For what attack? Megalodon?" Echo asked.
"A death cannon," Anas replied calmly.
"How can you say that with that calm voice?" Nex asked.
"Not important, but now since all of your paperwork is done, uhh, it's time for the four of us to spar principal Agnus," Anas said nervously.
"Wait why? We took Celestial Star Academy to victory in both events," Karasu replied.
"I said don't disappoint me, and you all disappointed me," principal Agnus.
"Wait why?" Nex asked.
"My riddle was so easy. How didn't any of you figure that out?" principal Agnus asked them.
"Pause, I guess you were talking about me," Anas replied.
"Well then, the 3 of you disappointed me, come on," principal Agnus said as she lifted them into the sky and floated off to the courtyard. Anas breathed a sigh of relief after he heard that.
"Are they going to be okay? Is Karasu going to be fine?" Raina asked.
"Uhh, probably no. They probably would get slammed into the ground repeatedly," Anas replied.
"And also, are we just going to forget the fact that you are building a death cannon?" Rai asked.
