Lights up. Azul Juniper is onstage. He’s clearly upset.
Azul: I don’t like this. On the night of the first day of the trip, Kylie came to me and said that she met a random hermit named Ihaan in the forest. At first, I didn’t believe her. I mean, how on earth could there be some random teenage boy living on the banks of the Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park unless he was separated from his family when he was little? However, the next morning, guess what? We ran into him! Yes! While we were portaging to Lake Temagami, we crossed paths and met him! Ihaan claimed that he was also heading to Latchford to find his lost memories, since he apparently has amnesia, so he decided to join us. Now we have some mysterious boy canoeing with us, and I don’t like it.
I don’t know what it is, but something about this boy makes me uneasy. You see, when we asked him about the Ghost of Ontario, he said he had no idea what we were talking about. He also has a limp in his walk, as if he broke his ankle a long time ago. It’s almost like… (Pause.) Oh no. People, keep your heads up. You may want to see this next scene.
Lights down. Shuffling is heard. Lights up. Kylie, Ihaan, Penelope, and Azul are sitting by a campfire. Ihaan has just finished telling a story. Azul has his arms crossed and his eyes closed.
Ihaan: So, the young canoeist followed the light to Heaven, where she was able to canoe forever and ever.
Kylie: (Crying.) Oh, what a beautiful story!
Penelope: That poor girl, but at least she’s now in a place where she can canoe to her heart’s content. How did you come up with that story, Ihaan?
Ihaan: (Shrugs.) I don’t know. This may sound weird, but I feel like I was told that story a long time ago.
Kylie: Really? You’re amazing, Ihaan. (She jumps up.) Alright, now it’s my turn! Scootch over! (She plops down next to Ihaan and peers into the fire.) Let’s see. Whoa. Wow. I see a story revolving around the Ghost of Ontario!
Ihaan: More about the Ghost of Ontario, Kylie? How come I’m the only one here who’s never heard of it before?
Azul: Yes, about that.
Penelope, Kylie, Ihaan: Huh? (They glance at Azul.)
Kylie: What do you mean, Dad?
Azul: Don’t you find it a little odd that Ihaan, a boy who’s been living in this provincial park all his life, has never heard of the Ghost of Ontario and us, who have not, know more about it than he does?
Penelope: What are you saying, Azul?
Azul: (Glances at Ihaan.) Ihaan, what happened to your ankle? Why do you walk with a limp?
Ihaan: I-I don’t know. I guess I was born with it.
Azul: Are you sure you didn’t become involved in a canoeing accident long ago that broke it?
Penelope: (Gasps.) Azul!
Azul: Let’s think about this for a moment, guys. Ihaan is a boy who’s been living in the Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park for a long time now, but he has no parents and no knowledge of the Ghost of Ontario. He has amnesia, and guys, how does one get amnesia anyway? Hm?
Long pause.
Azul (Cont.): People can get amnesia from a blow to the head. And how can a blow to the head happen?
Another long pause.
Azul (Cont.): It can happen during an accident. In this case, since we’re on the lake, a canoeing accident. Do you guys remember Ranger Kate? Remember when she said that her son went missing years ago? Remember when she said that she moved here ten years ago? Let’s connect the dots. The Ghost of Ontario’s canoe sank ten years ago on Red Squirrel Lake, and Kylie, you met Ihaan on that lake. Remember when Jamie said the Ghost of Ontario’s mother is still searching for him to this very day? Also, the Ghost of Ontario broke his ankle during that accident, and Ihaan has a bad ankle. At the time of the accident, the little boy was five years old. (To Ihaan.) You’re fifteen, aren’t you, Ihaan?
Ihaan: Uh, I guess so.
Kylie: So, what you’re saying, Dad, is that… (Gasps. She glances at Ihaan.) Ahhh! Ihaan is the Ghost of Ontario!
Azul: Exactly.
Kylie quickly jumps to her feet and leaves Ihaan.
Penelope: No way! Oh shoot, man, I’m outta here!
She also jumps to her feet quickly. She and Kylie back away from the bewildered Ihaan.
Azul: And there’s more. I have a hunch that Ranger Kate may be his mother.
Ihaan: My mother?
Azul: Yes, Ihaan. Your mother.
Lights down.
