"How?" was the first thing I asked myself. Einstein was fired for being irresponsible according to Captain Nigel and Arika was supposed to be in China. Maybe I was hallucinating?
It didn't take long before the two noticed us. They didn't say anything, but Arika managed to open a door, allowing us to escape the deadly spores that have just gone airborne.
At this point, I realised that Einstein and Arika were real and following them was the best move. I thought that we were safe, but the spores managed to get into the vents and were now emerging out of them.
- How did you come here? - I asked Einstein, to no response. My skin soon began to swell, which was probably caused by the spores that I accidentally inhaled. Now I understood why our allies were silent.
Once we reached a nearby lab and locked ourselves up in it to prevent the purple mist from reaching us, the swelling slowly turned to pain. Whatever the spores were doing wasn't good and Einstein noticed that.
He had a syringe in his pocket with a dense, yellow fluid. Without warning, he injected me with the substance and the pain started fading.
- Stay with us - Einstein muttered.
- I will, hopefully... - I replied. I was getting better, as the spores inside my body were destroyed by that yellow substance.
- Thank you - I added.
- Now that were safe, I wanted to say that I'm very happy to see you - Einstein panted - Also, where's Harold?
- We abandoned him after he revealed that he doesn't really care - Sebastian responded.
- Also, he was so clumsy - Claudius added.
- What a coward - Arika sighed.
Calming down a bit, I repeated my question.
- How did you come here?
- Oh, it's a long story so I'll cut it short. As you know, I'm still in the agency and got the information about your new mission through some of my colleagues who still work there. Meanwhile, Arika finished her mission in China and came to our base for a report. Fearing that Harold isn't the best replacement, I notified her about today's events. Coincidentally, Arika didn't have any operations schedueled for today, so we snatched a rocket and flew out... - Einstein explained - Additionally, I wanted to redeem myself as a supervisor.
- So you went... rogue? - Amber was surprised.
- We had to, because the situation on Earth isn't pretty - Arika noted. We wanted to know more.
In the meantime, Anthony formally introduced himself to Einsteina and vice versa, while we listened to the news from Arika.
- You remember the drone that was wrecked near your house? - Arika asked me and I replied with a quiet "Yes".
- Some weird fungi started growing out of it when the agents took it from the crash site. Since the supposed Chinese invasion was linked with BIORBTIAL, we easily connected the dots and hoped to contact you, but Nigel wouldn't allow us, so we were forced to go rogue - Arika finished.94Please respect copyright.PENANA682ogulpJw
- Maybe those fungi are the spores from the egg? - Claudius suggested.
- Sorry, I'm thrown into the middle of the situation so I don't know everything; what egg are you talking about? - Arika was puzzled.
- That thingy blown up by the Perseids is an egg-shaped bioweapon, so we dubbed it 94Please respect copyright.PENANAo5NDmPpnEG
"the egg" - I kindly explained.
- The Perseids are here? - Einstein and Arika asked simultaneously and Einstein later added - I thought we were dealing only with Lim and his men.
- Yes, they are and they blew up the egg right as Lim's thugs were about to kill us - Amber said.
- So they saved you? - Arika guessed.
- No, they left us to die from the spores and we would have died if it wasn't for your intervention - I added.
- No problem - Arika smiled.
- Speaking of the spores, they're flowing this way. We better move if we want to live - Anthony interrupted.
- Right, I was getting a bit too cozy. My bad - Einstein opened the door and ordered us to follow him as fast as possible.94Please respect copyright.PENANA4GsFMWKtHu
We did this, as the whole hallway was now engulfed in the purple fog, which none of us wanted to inhale, so we passed by it quickly, with it effectively chasing us. Einstein led us to an abandoned laboratory with spare hazmat suits inside. We swiftly put them on, as they'll protect us from the spores.
There was a window on the front wall and the view outside wasn't good. The purple mist somehow got to spread into the jungle and as Claudius predicted, fungi started rapidly growing, overtaking the flora around them.
- We need to ask ourselves: why did the Perseids, as you call them, blow up the egg? - Anthony asked a very important question.
- That's the organization's real name - Sebastian remarked.
- Wait - I started - Dad mentioned how Chinese and American agents are fighting over the secrets buried in this place. Maybe the Perseids want to kill them off with the fog?94Please respect copyright.PENANAEmngHIWpm9
- That may be true - Anthony replied - Both countries sent some of their best spies in here. Killing them would paralyze the intelligence agencies of both for a while.
- We know that the Perseids want the best for Russia and that country would, frankly, benefit the most from such an action - Einstein nodded.
- So we have to thwart them? - Amber asked excitedly.
- Of course, even though it will benefit China too. We need to save our best spies - Anthony responded with determination in his voice.
- Technically, we're already doing damage to China by having the Perseids blow up their cutting-edge bioweapon - Claudius mentioned.
- Yeah, let's go and defeat the Perseids! - Arika exclaimed - Again...
- But how? - Sebastian asked.
- Firstly, we should find them and confrim that we guessed their new plan - Einstein commanded.
With that, we chose to leave the restricted sector behind and go outside to see if the Perseids are there. Since they unleashed the power of a lethal bioweapon, they'd logically want to leave the place ASAP.
To limit our exposure to the surface, we went through the secret tunnel and emerged out of it in the oval building. While climbing the stairs, we saw Lim Yazhu in a similar hazmat suit to mine carrying a briefcase and saying something. Our translators allowed us to understand him.
- No, there's no time to waste! Soon everyone will probably die! Launch the rockets, NOW!!! - he yelled into the walkie-talkie which he was holding in his other hand.
- What rockets? - Claudius asked.
We decided to climb out of the oval building and see what's going on outside. Lim ran upstairs to catch a cable car and we saw him fleeing. Alarms were sounding and people were frantically running around, determined to escape in one piece. Through the thick purple fog, we saw something worrying happen outside, beyond the biodome.94Please respect copyright.PENANA5ADM4K44KE
Out of small craters surrounding the dome emerged rockets, each loaded with an egg similar to the one blown up by the Perseids. We had no doubts: they were planning to shoot these at the US, which is why Nigel was so concerned over a Chinese invasion. He knew something was coming and the Perseids only made it happen sooner.
We had two different schemes to thwart and we had no idea how to even start. Moreover, we didn't have much time left...
