I don’t know why

I welcomed her

I don’t usually talk

To the newbies

No one knows them

No one can tell you what they’re like

So you have to be

Careful

And

Open minded

The last newbie

I talked to

Shattered me

Into a million

And one

Pieces

But there’s something about her

Not that she looks so

Fragile

Like she could

Br  e  ak

Any second

Not because she’s so

So

So

Pretty

Which she is

But I don’t think she knows it

Or cares

But because

I saw her

While in my car

Sitting on a bench

Looking sad

Like someone

Had killed her puppy

But there was also a longing

In her gaze

As she sat there

Watching the cars leave

And new ones come

I wonder

What she was thinking about

I wonder

If she knows that I saw her

I wonder

What brought her such a great sadness

I wonder

If I can help heal that sadness

“I’m good now.”

She says

And I smile

A wide, genuine smile

“I’m glad,”

I wonder if she knows

That I know

That she’s talking about something else

“I’m glad.”

Her eyes

Go to the floor

To the wall

Over my shoulder

But don’t meet my face

Like she’s embarrassed

What does she have to be embarrassed for?

I shake my head

In my head

A softer

Smaller

Smile touches the corner

Of my lips

Her hair glass around her

Like a black curtain

Oh, so long

I wonder what it would feel like

To comb her hair

With my fingers

I shake the thought away

I shouldn’t think things like that

I barely

Know her

No one

Knows her

So

“Would you like to

Hang out sometime?"
