A Month Ago it was Different

The inkblot permanency

Of the statement rang like

The angriest tolling of bells

Like the sound of rushing

Pounding blood in ears

Used for years-

building tinnitus

Just before-

I had seen you holding the neck

Of your instrument

Running long fingers into the frets

Running long fingers into strings

And I remembered what those hands could do

I sat in perfect shy silence

Candy floss excitement

Like a little girl inside

Saddened by what I knew

What I had known for a month and

Refused to believe.

What never would have been

Playing in my head

For the next thirty seconds

Like a montage of my life

Flashing before my eyes
