I'm never usually awake before eleven, and when I am, I'm practically a rottweiler. I legitimately wanted to bite off Maurice's head when he started calling me a hundred times around eight in the morning. It sure is a good thing that Maurice is one of my favorite men, or else I probably would have.
"What do you want?" I asked in a vicious tone of voice when I answered Maurice's call.
"Sir, thank God you finally answered! You're not going to believe what happened last night! I tried calling you, but I think you were busy."
"Yep, I was. And right now I'm busy trying to get a little shut-eye. Make it quick."
"Me and a couple of the guys last night were over by this little market in downtown Dallas. We decided to grab something to eat off of this negro that was in the parking lot, and...and the weirdest freaking thing happened."
"What happened?"
"Some random kid with long hair jumped right out of nowhere and just start beating the hell out of us. We tried fighting back, but damn this kid had the quickest fighting moves I've ever seen. He could probably take out an entire army. I've never seen anything like it. We couldn't even keep up with him."
"Are you sure y'all weren't just tripping last night? Cause that doesn't sound the least bit real."
"It is real sir! Me and Jason were the only ones who escaped! The rest of the guys were taken out completely! We haven't heard from them, so we don't even know if they're still alive! Either he killed them or took them to the police. We don't know. But we're honest to God afraid to even go out in the streets again. The kid was so fast that we'd probably be on the ground before we could even spot him."
"Are you sure it was a kid?"
"It had to be a kid. He was really short and looked like he hadn't even hit puberty yet. What the hell are they teaching kids these days?"
I stood up off my bed and walked towards the window. It already looked scorching hot outside.
"Maybe it was a midget," I said.
"A midget?"
"They exist. And some of them have some pretty impressive fighting moves. Maybe he looked like he hadn't hit puberty when he's already wearing false teeth. I highly doubt some grade schooler is able to take out an entire group of my men. Unless he's been being trained to be some sort of killing machine since birth. But even that's doubtful."
"So then what, sir? Whether he's a kid or a dwarf, he's still a danger. I don't feel comfortable going outside knowing a crazy fighter like this is wandering the streets."
I scratched my nose.
"Just because he's a crazy fighter doesn't mean he is impervious to bullets," I said. "It's simple. We gotta' take him out. When something is causing our men to fall, we gotta' take out the source. And we already know the source. What did he look like?"
"Like I said, he's really short," Maurice replied. "He was also pretty scrawny. And he had really long hair. Black. Kind of like a woman's. That's all I remember."
"Pretty specific description. We should have no trouble finding him. As soon as we find out where he lives, all we do is wait until he's asleep. Then we can take him out before has the chance to even lift a finger. That's how you take out the source. You go for the weakness. And I've yet to meet a guy who isn't weak when asleep."
"How will we find him? Dallas is a huge city. He could live anywhere. How do we even know he lives in Dallas? He could be a foreigner for all we know."
"And we've got a lot of guys in Dallas. Like I said, it shouldn't be too hard to find a scrawny little midget with long black hair. Anybody that comes off as a threat to my men doesn't deserve to walk the streets freely. I'll make sure we find him."
"Alright, sir."
"You and Jason keep a close eye out. And keep your guns by your side. If you feel threatened, feel free to use them. But other than that, do nothing until I give the order first."
"So, if we find him, don't shoot him?"
"Bingo. The instant you see him, just find out where he lives. After that, just wait."
"Okay, sir! I'll get on that right now!"
"Call me as soon as you've found the location."
"Yes, sir!"
I then hung up the phone and lay back down on the bed. I was so damn tired. I was really not in the mood for dealing with a situation like this at that moment.
I yawned and closed my eyes.
