I watch over Riley as she rests. It's been a grueling two weeks. She needs all the rest she can get for now.
"Doc says she'll be strong enough to start walking again," Roddrick, my Gamma says as he leans against the wall closest to the front door.
"Good," is all I say as I continue watching her. To anyone else, it might be creepy, but this is my mate. I have this unwavering loyalty and sense of responsibility when it comes to her. She's my one true love. My literal other half. She's the one that I will stand by no matter what. She's the only one I would die for.
"How did I not know?" I ask weakly, more to myself.
"Doc says she was too weak for you to sense the pull. And even if she wasn't, that black stuff made it really hard for any of us to smell properly. So, if I were you, I wouldn't beat myself up about it too much," Roddrick responds.
I sigh, as I hold her hand, "I should have been there to protect her."
"You couldn't have done anything, Nate. You didn't even know she was your mate until a few days ago."
"You don't think I don't know that!" I get up from where I'm standing to face my Gamma. But, his attention is diverted toward the door.
"Someone's coming," he says as he reaches for the gun that's secured to his side.
It may look like a human gun, but it's cursed. It's a heirloom that was passed down through the generations of the Ashwood lineage. It's a gun that has the power to kill any supernatural being. Because of the curse, there are only two ways that the gun can reload itself: once all six bullets are used or if the holder dies before all the bullets are used. Either way, the user's fate is intertwined with the gun through death or by death. It's a never ending cycle known as the Curse of the Ashwood's. It's an unfortunate fate that my best friend is living with, and there's nothing anyone can do about it.
I quickly shield Riley from view. I couldn't protect her then, but I sure as hell can protect her now. I smell the air as the unknown person walks towards the door.
"Vampire," I mind-link Roddrick and he nods in response.
We prepare for a battle, but something doesn't seem right about a surprise attack. Instead of the vampire breaking down the door and attacking us, like we both assumed, they knock on the door. I give Roddrick the okay to investigate who it is. Before he opens the door, Roddrick pulls out his gun and points it forward. This surprises me because even though he always has the gun on him, he refuses to use it.
There he is, the vampire that has our full attention.
He quickly surrenders himself by putting both hands in the air, "don't shoot! I come in peace, and hopefully not pieces!"
Roddrick's eyes narrow at this, "what do you want, you blood sucker?"
"Ouch, a bit harsh don't you think?" the vampire fakes a sniffle as he grabs onto his chest.
"A bit dramatic, don't you think?" a weak voice responds from behind us. I turn around to face my mate, shocked that she's finally awake. I don't make a move towards her. I'm not sure what she's thinking, but all I know is that I'm 100 percent certain that I'll never let anything bad happen to her again.
"RILEY!" the blood sucker yells in excitement. He tries to make his way towards her but Roddrick is still on high alert and blocks him before he can get to Riley.
She starts coughing, and this is enough for the blood sucker to rush past Roddrick within seconds. He's right next to Riley, holding her hand. He's telling her that she'll be okay and that he's here now so she's safe. I don't hear much of his declaration but it's enough for my wolf to want his blood. How dare he be that familiar with my mate. Who does he think he is?
I quickly stalk up to them and rip him away from her.
"Who the fuck are you?" I threaten.
"The real question is 'who the fuck are YOU?'," the blood sucker responds coldly.
"I'm her fucking mate, you blood sucker!" I yell without thinking. The vampire's jaw tightens as Riley's head tilts forward into her hand.
"Ri, tell me this isn't true?" he pleads.
Riley sighs as she nods her head that's still in her hands.
"Fuck me," he breathes before turning to me, "well, I guess a proper introduction is in order. Names Lucas. I'm Riley's best friend."
