I watch as Lucas and The Alpha glare at each other. This is going to be interesting, and I'm afraid of how they'll react once I tell them what I went through.
I take a deep breath before I say, "sit down. It's been a month of hell, can you two please play nice. For my sake, at least."
I try to give them both my best sulking face. To my surprise, The Alpha is like putty in my hands; he slumps his shoulders in defeat. Lucas, on the other hand, has the face of someone who's just eaten a lemon.
"You look constipated," he says, but goes to sit down on a chair near the window.
"She does not," The Alpha says angrily.
"Watch your mouth, mutt."
"Fuck you, blood sucker."
My head falls back onto the pillow and I sigh in frustration. But before I can say anything, Madalyn walks into the room.
"Oh, darling. I'm glad to see you're in high spirits today," she says as she walks towards me for a hug, "how are you, dear?"
"I feel like I've been hit by a train. But I think I'll be okay," I say honestly. Madalyn is the one person I can confide in no matter what. She makes me feel safe. She's been a surrogate mother to me ever since I was turned into a vampire. She's been there for me through all my phases; the good and the bad. I'm glad to have her as an ally. She's a powerful witch with even greater influence in the supernatural realm.
"Now, dear, mind telling me why I was called to resurrect a vampire, only to see that it's you that needed saving?" she asks with a raised eyebrow.
I sigh, "it's a long story."
"Oh, sweetheart, I've got time," she says as she gracefully sits on thin air. It always surprises me at how gracefully she can be, especially in high pressured situations. It's like she never lets the situation affect her. It's what I admire most about her; the way she continues to stay poised and elegant.
I look around the room to see that I've got an audience - Lucas is sitting on a chair closest to the window, his arms resting on his knees. He's lost in thought but I can tell that he's listening to the conversation. The Alpha (I guess I should call him Nate since it's his name and he's my mate, but I can't bring myself to do it just yet) is leaning against the wall closest to the foot of my bed. His arms are crossed over his chest and he's staring at me very intently. It's almost as if he's afraid I would disappear at any second. The Gamma is standing the closest to the door, most probably as a guard. There's another woman in the room with us, I'm assuming she's The Alpha's mother. She's sitting on a chair next to Madalyn. And behind them, closest to a second door, stands the doctor who tried his best to treat me. He's younger than I thought he'd be.
I look around the room once more before I look down to my hands. I don't think I could look at any of them while I retell what I've been through. I shut my eyes quickly to stop myself from crying. I've been through so much and now I have to relive it so that these people can understand. I take a deep breath before I start:
"When I got to town, I went out to look for Kora. It had been so long since we last spoke to each other and I was starting to get worried. The address she gave me ended up being a dead end so I just walked around looking for clues. I could sense someone following me, but I wasn't sure if I was just being paranoid or not. I wanted to think my plan through before heading to the hospital," I stop to look up at Lucas. I know he probably blames himself for my disappearance. But he wasn't looking at me like I thought he was. Instead, his gaze was focused on something outside, but he was clenching his jaw in anger.
"The hospital?" my gaze lands on The Alpha as he asks the question.
"We were running low on blood supply. And with the news of vampires getting human blood from hospitals, security had become tight in our town."
"AND YOU JUST LET HER GO?!" The Alpha yells at Lucas. But Lucas just stays quiet.
"It was my plan to go and Lucas couldn't stop me. We needed the blood or we would have been found out," I explain before I continue.
"I sat down on a bench at the park. Next thing I know, my mouth is being covered by something that had silver on it and I was being restrained. I passed out," I hear a sob and see The Alpha's mother dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
"When I eventually woke up, I was in a cell. It was dark and my arms were handcuffed above my head. I tried to get out but I was still too weak from the silver." I didn't know what day it was or how long I'd been in that cell for. It was dark and cold.
"You don't need to tell us any more if you're not ready," Madalyn says as she pats my hand. It was then that I realized I stopped talking. I guess I was caught up in my own thoughts. I shake my head no, because if I can't do this now, then when will I be able to tell my story?
"Three men came into my cell. I don't know who they are. They wore these black masks with the eyes covered with red X's on them." I chuckle to myself as I recall the moment they stepped into my cell, "I was terrified. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. I don't even know how to describe it. It was pain; I think that's the best word I could come up with at the time." I stop to take a sip of some water.
"They gagged me and hosed me down with water for what felt like forever. I was cold and wet. I was so weak. I couldn't do anything to defend myself. They electrocuted me and beat me with silver whips. And all they did was laugh. Like they enjoyed torturing me. Cutting me. I remember one of them coming up behind me and pulling on my hair," I rub a spot on my scalp at the memory. I honestly thought he was going to rip out my hair.
"He told me to 'show them who I really am'. I was confused at first and then it hit me. They were doing it because I'm a vampire. They wore gloves so I couldn't confirm for sure if it was the group that Kane warned us about or not."
"What group?" this time it was the doctor's turn to speak.
Before I could say anything, Lucas responds for me, "we heard there's a group of humans who are experimenting on and torturing vampires. They have a tattoo of a wired cross on their right hand as a symbol of their group."
"What are these experiments?" the doctor asks. This time Lucas looks at me urging me to continue.
"T - they're trying to purify vampires," I stutter.
Madalyn gasps as The Alpha punches the wall behind him.
"So the black substance?" the doctor continues to ask, not phased by The Alpha's outburst.
"That was my body trying to get rid of the 'vampire within me', as they called it. It was eating me from the inside out. They believe that because we were once human, they can cleanse us and renew our human-side again."
"Do you know what they put in you?" the doctor asks.
"I- I'm sorry, I don't know. But, they said that once they've 'cleansed all vampires', their mission is to eradicate other supernatural beings from this planet," I shudder, "these people aren't normal. They're sick and twisted."
"How did you get away?" Madalyn asks.
"I- I wasn't the only one in there. There were so many vampires. I- I couldn't keep track of all of them; those who died and those who were dying. And- ," I look into Madalyn's eyes before I say the one thing that will change the witch she is forever, "K- Kora."
