*2 years later*
I sigh as I hear a knock on the door. I switch the TV off as Lucas emerges from the kitchen.
"It's them again," he says before walking towards the door, "remember to put your gleam up, Ri, we don't need another incident."
"I know Luc, that last time caught me off guard," I mutter as he opens the door.
"To what do I owe this displeasure, boys?" he taunts with a mischievous smile.
"Cut the crap, Langly, we need a sample of your blood," Officer Crow barks back.
Lucas responds by rolling his eyes but complies by stretching out his arm, "make this quick, I have a dinner to eat."
"And the other one," Crow grits out.
"The other one has a name," I say as I walk up to them, "we do this every month, Crow, let's all be friends!"
Officer Crow narrows his eyes towards me, "fat chance."
"Like your mother," Lucas says under his breath.
"The fuck did you just say, Langly?" Crow says, losing all composure and grabs for Lucas' shirt.
Lucas clears his throat and says a bit louder, "I SAID, LIKE YOUR MOTHER!"
And with that, Officer Crow punches Lucas in his face.
The two of them start fighting and I crouch down trying to stop them. Crow's partner comes to break up the scene, and in doing so quickly hands me the two tubes of blood they just took from us as I hand him two different tubes of human blood. I quickly tuck our tubes into Lucas' back pocket before we "pull" them apart.
"See you next month, dipshit Crow," Lucas says smugly.
"Eat shit, Langly," Crow grits out after spitting blood on the pavement.
Lucas stands up and dusts himself off. He looks up at the surveillance camera on our porch and flips it off before we both head inside.
"That asshole really had a lot of rage in his punch this time," he says as he rubs his jaw.
"You did have it coming. I mean, you dissed his mother for crying out loud," I say rolling my eyes.
"Hey! I'm running out of reasons for him to start a fight with me. That good for nothing Demon."
"Well, that 'good for nothing Demon' is helping keep us all a secret. The fact that everyone in this damn country has surveillance on them 24/7 is absolutely ridiculous. We're even running low on blood supply."
Lucas' face turns dark, "how much more?"
"Enough to last at least until December. We'll need to make a trip to the hospital again."
"That's too risky, Riley, you know that."
I take a deep breath in, "I'll make the trip this time. I've thought about it, and what if I use my research as an excuse to travel to the next town over. I can get the blood from their hospital within a couple of minutes."
"It's too dangerous, Ri."
"Last I heard, Destiny works there now so it'll be easier having someone on the inside."
"I don't care! You're not going!" Lucas shouts.
"Keep your damn voice down," I whisper.
"Riley, going to any hospital at this time is like a death wish. After they found Ben in the blood supply security has been increased in all hospitals across the country."
"I know that," I whisper, "but I can at least try. I mean, what happens when we run out of our supply? They'll find us out."
"Like you said, we have until December to figure it out. Let's not rush into it."
"Fine, but if you can't come up with something better in the next few months then we stick to my plan, got it?"
"Yeah, sure. I need to make a call."
"To Kane?" I ask out of curiosity.
"Who else," he says, deadpan.
I roll my eyes as I make my way to my laptop. I need to finish this paper or my editor will have my head.
