Plain Vanilla - Chapter 7

We payed for our donuts and headed back home,

“I can’t believe you threw my purse across the room Xan” I rolled my eyes.

“What? I can’t let a lady pay for her own food when I am in the presence of her. Plus, I went and got it back.” He grinned.

“Whatever,” I turned my head and looked down at my phone, I saw two text messages

‘Hey! R u okay?’

‘C’mon answer me!’

I had no idea who this was from, so I replied,

‘Ummm, who are you?’ It immediately went to read

‘Ehm, It’s me Shane…’ my jaw dropped.

‘Oh. I thought you hated me?’ I texted back.

‘I don’t, well, kind of.’

‘Why are you texting me, and who gave you my number?’ I felt a cold tension between me and Xan.

‘Well, I heard what happened, and your friend gave it to me.’

‘What friend, I don’t have friends’ I enjoyed putting the text in italics.

‘Um, your friend, Phoebie.’

‘Oh, her. Cool. Who told you what happened.’

‘Um, you don’t know? You were on the news, this Alexander guy put it out there, he seemed pretty close to you.’

‘Oh….’ I didn’t send anything after that.

“Xan.” I blinked.

“What?” He said coldly.

“Okay then..” I start towards the crosswalk 15ft ahead of me.

“Come back here.” I heard Xan yell.

“No!” I retorted angrily.

Xan starts running towards me so I run even faster.

I heard a scream and then I saw Xan push me onto the sidewalk.

I blinked once and then heard a car screech to the curb.

“Is she okay?!!” I heard a lady scream and then slam the door.

“She’ll be fine. Go.” He said coldly to the lady.

“Sir, I will kindly let you know that I am a doctor, and I can help her.” She scoffed.

“I- I’m sorry” I sat up slowly.

“No, no, sweetie, lie back down.”

“Please. Go.” He glared.

“bu-”

“Please. Go.”

“Fine.. take care of her.” She got up and left.

“Get up.”

I got up and I heard him silently gasp.

“Walk.”

I stared at him blankly.

“Now.”

I didn’t move a muscle.

“Vanessa. MOVE.”

“Why?” I muttered.

“Because I-” he stopped.

“Hm?” I stared.

“Because…”

“Because I-”

“Because I want you to.”

“I don’t really care for cold people ya know.. So if you don’t mind I’m not going to listen to you.” I turned away and walked past him the opposite direction of his house.

I felt his cold hand grab my wrist.

“Please don’t go..” His face was bright red.

“Why Alexander.”

“Because I need you…” he turned his head in shame.

“You what!? You were being so rude earlier.” I narrowed my eyes at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“That doesn’t mean anything” I straightened my face.

He looked me straight in the eyes and I could feel his heart beating hard

And then he said

“I love yo- wait no… like as a- as a friend.” He stuttered.

“Yeah.”

“I do…” his eyes softened.

“Whatever.. if you really ‘needed’ me then you should’ve told me I was a foothold and not a friend.” I steadied my feet.

“You are- Vanessa! Please don’t be like this! Don’t leave me! You promised! Please…” he fell to his knees, quite literally.

“I never promised anything…” I couldn’t bare looking at him.

I didn’t hear anything from him for about two minutes, then I decided to look at him.

His head was down, and he was crying.

“Why are you crying..?” I said as softly as I could.

No answer-

I sighed and held out my hand for him, he looked up and grabbed it.

“Let’s go..” I muttered quietly.

He held my hand tight the whole way home.
