This will be another super-long one. Here goes! The “racist” thing for Itachi’s a bit tricky to answer, but bear with me. I’m going to go into this step by step. You can say that Danzo manipulated Itachi through Sasuke and end it there:

But is it really that simple? Not quite. First, why did Itachi do this and to protect whom? Konoha against outside forces if the civil war broke out? It’s strange because we know for a fact that Konoha was completely obliterated once (Pein’s attack), lost Hokages twice, and during one attack, even Kurama broke loose. Each time, Kohona suffered massive casualties and damage to its infrastructure. Massive! I won’t count the Sand Village as one to take advantage of the situation because they were fully involved in Orochimaru’s plan to attack the village from the inside during the Chunin exams.

Now, why did no village take advantage of the chaos and take Konoha out and even take Kurama? These look like golden opportunities, don’t they? It’s that “treaties” with the other villages were in place, or the villages were dealing with their own problems. Mist had its own problems with the “Bloody Mist” thing, which was only cleaned up properly when Mei took charge. The thing took place there because Obito was doing all of that by controlling the Mizukage:

Cloud’s Hachibi had just found a more suitable host and Bee had gone into training to learn the tailed beast bomb. In fact, he never left the village during the time he trained to become a perfect Jin, which means that his fights with Minato happened before all of that:

Similarly, Raikage was amassing Jutus during that time, and he’d also tried to kidnap Hinata, after which a peace-treaty was signed by offering him Neji’s father’s head. Onoki makes a reference to that that it takes a lot of time to take control of the Bijuu. It isn’t something you can do overnight:

Sand was already too weak to attack Konoha on its own because Gaara’s father repeatedly tried to assassinate him (because he couldn’t control the bijuu properly), and he killed people for sport and tried to kill himself, too, because of his deep mental issues. He was unstable because of the psychological abuse he was being put through, which is why he changed before the plan ever took shape during their attack on Leaf:

Onoki was busy paying the Akatsuki to commit terrorism through Akatsuki. Who else’s left behind? No one. So who was Itachi going to protect his village against? It makes no damn sense. It seems very clear to me that Danzo and elders played him by using his weakness against him. But is it completely true that Sasuke was the only reason he massacred his clan? No. This brings us to the second argument.

Second, continuing on from the previous argument, let’s look at some facts about Itachi: he was recruited into Anbu after six months of training and for six months he spied for the Hokage and the council:

It isn’t possible for someone to change this much in mere six months that he’d start throwing kunais into his clan’s symbols, spewing hatred against his clan, disrespecting his father, and committing the massacre. It means that he had these ideals from the start:

He’s not only disrespecting his father (this attitude would be looked down upon in a place like Japan; he’s disrespecting his father for nothing), refusing to back down, but he’s also openly speaking against the clan:

Why’s he doing this? Why would he put on an act to alienate the people whose trust he’s supposed to earn to keep carrying on his double-agent job?

There’s zero reason to believe that Itachi didn’t despise the clan or what it stood for when in the end he felt no remorse for what he did even after he died (scan below).

But what is the council? The elders’ council’s made up entirely of the people in the Tobirama’s original squad when he was a Hokage. Bear with me here because this point’s very important to establish a link between Itachi’s bigotry and Tobirama’s.

The elders’ council is literally made up of the leftovers of Tobirama’s original squad:

Sure, it had Kagame in it, but Tobirama states pretty explicitly that Kagami was a part of his squad because he’d put aside his clan. Doesn’t it sound like “either you’re with us or against us” statement? It does, doesn’t it? Kagami was only trusted because he wasn’t chummy with his own clan. Otherwise, he would’ve been shown the same treatment.

Besides, just because Kagami was from the Uchiha clan doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a racist scumbag (it’s like saying that women can’t be misogynist assholes because they’re women!), because being in that squad meant that he knew about what Tobirama was doing and was totally fine with it like Itachi.

Tobirama was the one who laid the foundation of all of the village’s principles, rules, exams, and political rules, which all the main villages in the entire world copied. So the whole darkness of the shinobi-verse can be put on his shoulders for coming up with a system that shunned democracy and promoted nothing but fascism:

This is especially disturbing because Tobirama was the first person who abolished democracy when he actually spoke in its favor first simply because he didn’t want any Uchiha in power. That’s right, Konoha actually operated on democracy when the original treaty was signed on the basis of equal treatment of the founding clans. But when Hashirama died and Madara was presumed dead, he went back to his own bigoted ways and started the precedent of the Hokage appointing the next successor in line, and Tobirama was the first person who did that; Hashirama was appointed through voting:

Now, why would he do that? Simple, he didn’t want Madara to take the Hokage seat (because after Hashirama, there was a high chance that people would’ve voted for Madara and Tobirama didn’t want that), which is why he ran along with a rumor that Uchiha suffered from the “Curse of Hatred” that affected their mental state and made them dangerous:

Madara overheard that and realized that if Tobirama was allowed to rule in any form, Uchiha would be massacred in the future:

Madara’s right here, because Hashirama probably appointed Tobirama his successor; so it was actually Tobirama that caused Madara to distrust the Senju and Tobirama in the first place. As a leader of the clan, it was his responsibility to ensure the safety of his people. The Uchiha didn’t listen to Madara, but he did tell them that Tobirama was up to no good, and when the Uchiha noticed the mistreatment, they automatically sided with Madara’s original plan. Can you blame them? No.

The treaties are created with the principles and agreements in mind that the participants would agree to the “terms of agreement” in the treaty. Tobirama not only abolished democracy, established a fascist regime in its place, but he went behind the terms of agreement in the treaty to fuel his racist and bigoted agenda.

He started the surveillance by giving Uchiha the job of the police force, so that keeping them in line and their surveillance would be easy. The Anbu weren’t even allowed to be arrested by the police force without a warrant approved by the Hokage. Isn’t it amazing?

Tobirama gave them a job, but to keep the surveillance active, he made sure none of the Anbu could ever be arrested on any kind of suspicions. Doing that would’ve been considered an act against the Hokage and the village: treason! And then people claim that Tobirama did justice to the clan, because even here, he showed what a bigot he truly was.

By taking all of these steps, he removed the Uchihas involvement completely from the power-structure in the village. This is a direct disagreement and breach of the contract signed through the treaty. None of these actions are moral, just, ethical, or even rule-abiding. They’re literally designed to shun the Uchiha more and more. And they weren’t even pushed figuratively out of the village’s politics. No, they were literally pushed to the brink of the village:

Tobirama started this and by Hiruzen’s time their “population movement” was complete, which by the way is a “war crime” because it (almost) always leads to genocides. And it did happen, didn’t it? Just like it does in real life and just like how Madara had predicted.

Even Orochimaru disagreed with Tobirama’s methods and policies and jutus. He stated that they all caused problems. If a vile criminal like Orochimaru disagreed with Tobirama’s methods, then you can bet that what he was doing was completely unethical.

And Hashirama confronts his brother and states that Tobirama tried to persecute and continued to persecute them many times. Splendid!

Look at the way he talks to Sasuke as soon as he introduces himself as an Uchiha. Tobirama doesn’t know what Sauske’s doing. He doesn’t know a damn thing:

He calls Sasuke a “scoundrel” for no reason other than the fact that Sasuke’s an Uchiha and just assumes that Uchihas always side with the enemy. Is that how a person would react if he isn’t biased, racist, and bigoted? No. He says that he knew the Uchiha will be annihilated in the future (scan below). How?

So why did I tell this long story to make a point? It’s that Itachi’s linked to all of this. In fact, he’s at the core of this entire mess. Kagami was Shisui’s ancestor, and he was an integral part of Tobirama’s original squad:

Itachi not only was Shisui’s closest friend, but he also considered Shisui a “true brother”. The elders’ council’s literally the last surviving part of Tobirama’s squad. Danzo also knew Obito before the massacre. Conveniently, he made himself known to Itachi when he needed to kill off the whole clan:

Is it a coincidence that all of these people resulted in the genocide of the Uchiha? Is it a huge coincidence that Itachi’s directly linked to Tobirama’s outlook through Shisui, who he greatly admired, and the council he willingly chose to serve and the clan he willingly chose to betray? No.

A lot of people claim that Itachi knew nothing and that he was forced into it, and that’s the biggest nonsense I’ve ever read, and that brings us to the final part of this answer.

So, last, why’s Itachi so deeply responsible for all of this and is a racist individual? Because he knew everything from both sides. Yes, Itachi was aware of everything that was happening between the village and the Uchiha and the whole Akatsuki thing that they were being used by the villages liberally to commit acts of terrorism to keep their funds running:

Why else would it have been so convenient for Danzo to plan things with Obito and for Itachi to join the Akatsuki on Konoha’s behalf?

It was a ready-made plan. Hiruzen literally states before Sasuke that the whole council left everything in Itachi’s hands, so he wasn’t forced to do anything. He did everything because he chose to do it:

Yes, everything. He had no qualms about killing innocent men, women and children, elderly, too. Yes, I don’t buy this “but Obito killed the children and Itachi’s so nice that he only killed mean people!” nonsense. That’s anime filler! Itachi did kill innocent children, elderly, and other civilians that had no clue about any of this. Danzo calls the children the “unknowing/innocent children”.

The Uchiha were literally pushed to the outskirts of the village before the Kurama attack even happened. So they planned the coup after they had had enough. Shisui also told Itachi that Danzo stole his eye when he tried to use it to control the situation:

And Shisui’s got the most powerful genjutsu in the whole Uchiha clan. Something Itachi knew. He didn’t use it as a safety-plan for brain-washing Sasuke into Konoha’s lap-dog for nothing, you know. So after all the genocide and physical and mental tortures of Sasuke, dear ol’ Solo-King was still not satisfied; he wanted to brain-wash Sasuke completely into a vegetable that would only say “Konoha’s so amazing!”. What a kind brother. A true pacifist!

Koharu said in front of him that they won’t give the Uchiha any power in the politics. Something they deserved because of the original treaty that was signed on the basis of equality!

They elders never knew that Obito caused the disaster. No one knew! That’s only we readers who know that. Minato who knew died before he could tell anyone. So their suspicions were formed on no evidence whatsoever.

Bijuu break free of their hosts all the damn time, and Kushina was going through a delicate phase of child delivery. It wasn’t as if there wasn’t a chance that it couldn’t happen. It’s proven time and time again through the Bee’s and Gaara’s incidents. So this argument that “this could only be the Uchiha’s doing” is nonsense. The council’s main problem was that they didn’t want the Uchiha to have their fair share of power. Danzo also knew about Itachi’s perspective on things and why he did what he did. So let’s not pretend that Danzo was some bogeyman and Itachi was an innocent child who didn’t know what he was doing. No. All of them agreed to this:

Sasuke made sure that he asked every single person about this. Every. Single. One.

Itachi knew that Uchiha only wanted their share in the village’s politics. But he still sided off with a fascist regime to kill all of his clan. It wasn’t as if he was foolish or anything. No, he had the thinking capability of a Hokage at the age of seven:

He was aware of the dark part of the village, but he was completely fine with it:

Shisui gave this man his eye that had the most powerful Genjutsu in it:

What did he do with it? Nothing. He had Shisui’s eye and he did nothing with it. There’s nothing to suggest that its “charge” period was in effect during that time.

So let me ask you one thing: is it a coincidence that all of the people involved in the massacre agreed with a racist, bigoted individual’s ideology? No. So if Tobirama was a racist, then how is Itachi who agreed with everything Tobirama stood for any different? He isn’t. Itachi’s racist, bigoted, and a fascist regime supporter. And nothing in the manga suggests otherwise. He even believed in it as an Edo, after his death, basically. He showed no remorse for killing off his whole clan in cold blood even as he said his final farewell. No, he said that a 7-year-old child should’ve averted the coup (he’s a thumb-suckling idiot, too, but that’s a whole different topic):

Even in the end he showed not a shred of guilt that he’d committed a genocide. No, he said that the Uchiha could’ve been changed, which means that in his eyes they needed to be changed.
