Darkness; a complete and utter emptiness shrouded Laura as she floated in between life and death. What did it mean to live? What did it mean to die? She heard Hanako's voice; the sadness in her voice was unlike any other pain she had felt. She could feel the warmth of her tears fall upon her face as Hanako cried over her. Time had no meaning in the space between life and death. Laura stared into the abyss of darkness around her while she waited for her time to leave the physical world. What would death be like?
You don't want to know.
A distant voice monotonously answered her question. Laura could do nothing but stare into the abyss, she blinked. Who is speaking to me?
The one who decides who lives and who doesn't.
Laura narrowed her eyes, what do you mean?
You sacrificed yourself for a girl? Love gets you nowhere in life, trust me. I am cursed to be the decider by the one I loved.
Why?
Why? What do you mean why? I don't know why she placed me here. I gave her everything.
The space shook with rage as the voice angrily spoke. Laura felt a sharp pain in her chest quickly grow. The voice hummed.
You're going to die. Shall I let you?
Laura tried to scream, but her voice refused to speak. I do not want to die! I must return to Hanako! I must! She began to struggle against the force in the space in between life and death, despite the pain in her chest becoming unbearable.
It's futile. No one can escape the path to death.
Frost began to freeze the invisible force binding Laura, the voice hummed as it watched her free herself. Laura's eyes turned from those of a human to those of a Dragon. She roared angrily as she fought against the force on the path to death.
Don't fight it, we're almost there.
Suddenly, Laura transformed into a massive dragon with iridescent blue scales and crystal colored eyes. She ran back in the opposite direction of wherever they were going. The voice watched her ultimately escape the darkness in a calm silence.
Iria created a real monster with that one.
"However, she has yet to suffer." Another voice chimed in.
Laura could feel herself fall from the sky and back into her body. Even though she had escaped the space inbetween life and death, she still had to find a way to awaken herself from her slumber. She could feel Hanako watch her without rest. Iria would visit alone and mumble to herself about how naive she was when she created her. What did she mean create? Laura struggled to awaken herself, she felt trapped in her own body. Days passed while Laura continued to fight against herself. Why couldn't she awaken? What must she do? Then she heard Iria's voice speak to her.
"You must free yourself of your emotions and ties, you cannot awaken until you become free. Your Dragon is unlike the others from your clan, you cannot let the darkness I placed inside of you consume you. Freeze everything that holds you back." Iria commanded in a firm tone.
Laura exhaled shakily, freeze everything that holds me back? She calmly entered her own mind to search for her emotions and ties; the things that hold her back. It felt like days as she walked through the labyrinth of memories in her mind. Then, she came upon an evil within herself, a version corrupted by Iria's darkness. They stared at one another in silence, but her darker self moved to attack. Laura closed her eyes before successfully freezing this other version. The walls in her mind suddenly collapsed around her, which revealed a blue aureole of light floating in the center of the labyrinth. She hesitantly approached the light.
"You seek power, you wish to return to Hanako." The light's voice was soft and light as it spoke to her calmly.
Laura nodded her head in response.
"The darkness has been frozen, your ties cut. Yet, your dragon has yet to awaken. How come?" The light questioned while circling around Laura.
"It is because you are unworthy to awaken your dragon!" The lightboomed angrily.
Laura tried to speak, but she had no voice in her own mind.
"You cannot even speak! Why shall I grant you power, if you do not have the power to overcome the fear of losing the one you hold dear?!" The light grew angrier.
Laura tried to speak again.
"You are unworthy of your gifts! Daughter of Dragons, Daughter of the Slayers! You are revolting! You will never awaken your dragon with your own clan's blood on your filthy hands!" The light quickly engulfed Laura, it began to strangle her spirit.
The darker version slowly approached Laura from the shadows of her mind, it reached out its hand. Laura stared at her before desperately reaching back for its hand. If she could not overcome her demons then she would have to accept them. The light gasped in horror as the darker Laura slowly slithered up her arm and into her mouth.
"What have you done?!" The light sneered venomously before releasing Laura.
Laura furiously coughed as she held her throat, "I am merely accepting me for who I am. Now, if you do not wake me up, I will shatter you." She sneered in a distorted voice.
Her left her eye had turned completely black while her right eye remained the same as her Dragon's.
"Never!" The light charged at Laura, who lowered her head.
The light froze inches away from her, it looked down upon itself. Laura had froze her entire mind, including the light. She punched through the light and shattered it.
What do we do now?
The darker version of herself questioned in a bored tone.
