David Buckman swiftly followed as Sarah went into the grocery store. “What are you picking up?” he said to her.
“Not much. Milk, butter, bread. You know the basics.”
David caught up to Sarah as he pushed the cart beside her.
“I don’t need one of those,” Sarah said gesturing to the cart as she picked up an orange from the produce section.
“Well, you never know.” David replied with a smile.”
“So how’s Rose?”
He was unsure about how to respond. He didn’t want to tell her everything. First off, David knew it wasn’t his place to talk about the video of Rose. And that letter to Sarah from Greg, he couldn’t even imagine her reading it. David then answered “She’s doing okay, I guess. She was released from the hospital and is staying at my place.”
“I’m surprised you're not with her?”
“I would be but then I realized I left some of my work at the precinct. Rose also told me to pick up some work for her. Even though the Captain told her she has to be off work for a mandatory three weeks, plus a week of desk duty. You know how she is. She never rests.”
“Yeah,” Sarah said with a laugh.
“So what about earlier?” David said hesitantly.
“What about it?” He noticed as Sarah had turned her back to him.
“I’m going to press charges?”
“What if I don’t want you to? Does that mean I’ll have to go to court?”
“Well, he was resisting arrest.” David saw Sarah as she appeared anxious as she turned to face him.
“I don’t have the energy to do that.”
He decided to let the conversation go for now as he browsed through the various grocery store aisles. Finally arriving at the checkout line David helped Sarah load the items onto the counter.
“David, can you do me a favor?”
“What do you need?”
“Can you not tell Chris about what happened today?”
“Why not?”
“I don’t feel like hearing him rant.”
“He cares about you, Sarah. I’ve never seen someone care for their spouse so much.”
“Have you heard anything about Victor?”
“You’re on a first name basis with him?”
“Chris is on a first name basis with his clients. It makes the experience more calming.”
“How did you find out about him?”
“It was easy. I did a quick online search and read some reviews.”
“He didn’t have a physical office?”
“No. Not that I know of. He wanted more of a modern approach to therapy.”
“What about his credentials?”
“I just skimmed them. I didn’t do any in depth research.”
“Was that the only time you’ve seen him?”
“Yes. Except when he broke into your house. By the way, do you have more information on that.”
“No. I’m technically off the case, so I only get bits and pieces from overhearing a conversation or if Rose tells me anything.”
“Did they tell you about the envelope I was sent?”
“A little bit. I didn’t know Dr. Waterstein sent it to you.” David replied as he helped Sarah put the groceries in the plastic bags.
“Well, it was from Victor. But a man named Henry Croswell I believe that was his name sent me, well handed me the envelope. He then told me that it was from Victor.”
“So you’re telling me that Dr. Waterstein just happened to know where I live? And on top of that, he knew you were staying with me?” David questioned shaking his head in disbelief.
“Yeah, I guess.”
“What was Henry wearing?”
“Black coat, blue jeans, and probably boots. And David thanks for coming with me.” Sarah said with a smile as she carried a grocery bag on each of her arms.
“Let me carry those for you,” David said as they walked towards the exit.
“I’m good.”
“Well, I’ll call a taxi or a rideshare company to take you home.”
“I can take the train back.”
David rolled his eyes at his sister’s stubbornness. They walked out of the store as the sidewalks were being cleared from the fresh snowflakes that had just fallen.
“I don’t feel like going home,” Sarah said.
David could sense the tiredness in her voice and he said to her, “I’ll take you to my home. I’m sure Rose would love to see you. But there’s one catch…”
“Uh oh…” Sarah smirked.
“You have to let me carry the groceries.”
“Deal.”
David took the bags from Sarah. He was hoping that his sister would finally get some rest. 279Please respect copyright.PENANAegBmEqGAWj
