Dolly stares at her paper mindlessly drawing majestic unicorns. This was the only thing she can draw. No really! The horses she creates have such detail and depth, but tell her to draw a person and you get a lopsided stick figure. She was content with the horses she drew, but Nate was constantly bashing her art style.
Dear lord, why did she like him! Maybe it was because he stood beside her for so long. Or that he had occasional acts of kindness. Note that the word occasional should be especially pronounced.
The cafe owner taps the table the artist was drawing on, letting her know that they were closing shop. As Dolly gathers her supplies and waves goodbye, the middle aged woman grins slightly. The girl had been coming to her shop for years and nowadays she was especially light spirited. Of course she had her days, where she would come into the cafe to mope and try to draw a flower, before somehow reverting the sketch into a pegasus.
The woman gave a small chuckle as she watched the middle school girl almost trip on a puddle from the rain earlier in the day. The cafe owner sent a small prayer, that the girl should get home safely. The prayer only partially came true.
Dolly walks a different route than she normally does, wanting to get a change of scenery. This was a bit of a mistake on the brunette's part, because the neighborhood had some shady people hanging out around the street. One of which approached the seventh grader. His hair was bleached nearly white, face was covered in piercings and he was very tall. Normally a person would sense danger from the man's threatening glare, but not Dolly. No, her reaction was much different.
"Do you wanna see my drawing?!" The girl asked excitedly, causing the delinquent to be taken back. Usually the kid would just hand over her lunch money or something. This was quite different, but he chose to entertain her nonetheless.
"Uh, sure." The teen's grey eyes widen at the picture's detail, he can sell this! But the fact someone five years younger than him was so much better than he can ever be, pissed him off. So, he ripped it to shreds before the heart broken girl.
"Y-you're toast!" She points a shaking finger at the pale teen who raised his brows.
"Am I?" The boy says in an amused voice. Toast. By her? He wanted to laugh at her irrational statement. Apparently the artist agreed, as she burst into tears and ran to her best friends house.
"You're a jerk, Josh." A fellow delinquent states as he watches the girl sprint away.
"Meh, I try." Came the arrogant response.
Nate was awoken by his front door being repeatedly rapped on. What's their problem, it was ten at night! Can't they just let the redhead sleep?! When the rapping did not stop, the boy lazily dragged himself out of bed and answered the door in his boxers, ready to yell at whoever was trying to ruin his precious sleep time.
On the other side was his best friend Dolly Oakley, who immediately wrapped her arms around Nate's waist. Cherry blossom pink tinges his cheeks as he realizes what's happening. He quickly takes her arms off of his waist and orders the brunette to wait on the couch. Which she did wearing an embarrassed expression, the girl didn't realize the lack of clothes on his body.
The boy locks himself in his room, throwing on his best clothes. Did he seem eager? Maybe. But, at the moment all he could think is that the best friend liked him back! That doesn't happen often. Right?
He came back into the living quickly, and sits next to the girl. Very close to her and it made Dolly a bit nervous. So, she promptly scooted away. She liked Nate, but he did not return those feelings. Why make things awkward?
There was a frown on his lips, as he tries to hold her hand, which she immediately moved out of reach. Suddenly, he was not so confident about his friend returning his feelings.
"Why did you come here?" His tone showing traces of irritation.
"Um... a guy with bleached hair tore up my picture," Dolly says suddenly feeling that the issue was unimportant. Her friend groaned.
"Seriously! I thought you liked me!" The boy yells at the girl, frustrated.
"I do like you!" She yells back. Not even knowing why she was shouting in the first place.
"No! I mean love like, you idiot!" He continues to scream.
"That's what I meant, you moron!" She ends the dialogue with the insult. There was a long period of silence, where the two preteens think about what they were saying.
"So... uh,"Nate starts, catching the girl's attention. "Do you wanna go out for a movie next weekend?"
"I would love to." Dolly smiled brightly. The brunette pulls out a charm bracelet, that was identical to her own. "I was going to give this to Mara on her birthday, but I think you deserve it."
"For what?" Nate asks clearly confused.
"For being my new boyfriend silly!" And on that note, the middle schoolers lived happily ever after.
