We all thought that he was crazy, spouting tales of not so far off days, where warriors of some Dark Lord would raid our once peaceful town, destroying most everything that lived and leaving behind nothing but despair. Once fertile lands are now deserts, river beds are dry when once they held the clearest blue water, and somewhere in the cave systems we called home, a boy rocks back and forth, his arms wrapped around himself.
"I told you so. I told you so." It is the only words he speaks anymore, and even those words he repeats less and less as the times go by, sometimes lapsing into silence for hours. It is during that time when we realize just how much we have lost, for none of us dare speak least the Dark Lord's minions find us. We are running out of time and out of hope.
One last time I turn to him, asking the question I had asked many times before. "What can we do?"
And, like always, his reply was,"It's already too late."
It all started two moons ago, when the crippled boy began to speak of an evil unlike any seen by this world. We laughed it off, because to us it was proof that the boy was mad, and had he anyone to pay, he would have been place in the home for those with mental illness, but he had no one. To be honest, no one even knew his name or where he came from. He was just cripple boy, not even a true title. He was lower than the mangy dogs who roamed the streets, though I was one of the few who took pity in him, sharing with him my daily bread, though I was careful that he didn't touch my robes or wings. As I would leave, he would look directly at me and say "They're coming. We must them." He said that to any who would pass, reaching out to grab their wings or robes. Now my once clean robes are streaked with filth, my wings dirty and torn. I can't help but wonder what would have happened if we had believed him, not that it matters. Nobody believed him until it was too late, and we do believe that it truly is too late, for the cripple boy told us so.
