3. 用在指出該名詞是唯一的人或實體
例如：the sun（太陽）、the moon（月亮）、the earth（地球）、the world（世界）、the Arctic（北極）等等。
也可以是有身份地位的人，例如：the prime minister（首相）、the queen（女皇）、the school principal（校長）等等。
例句（一）：The prime minister will give a speech.（首相將會演說。）
例句（二）：The queen is coming.（女皇來了。）
4. 用在最高級和序數的前面
例如：the first（第一名）、the second-floor（二樓）、the last show（最後一場演出）等等。
5. 用在樂器、知名建築物或藝術品的前面
例如：the piano（鋼琴）、the violin（小提琴）、the Louvre（羅浮宮）、the Mona Lisa（蒙拉麗莎）等等。
例句（三）：I play the piano, and my brother plays the guitar.（我彈鋼琴，我弟弟就彈吉他。）
6. 指出特定的時間
例如：the evening（傍晚）、the future（未來）、the past（過去）、the 1997（1997年）、the 19th-century（十九世紀）
7. 指出特定方向與方位的前面
例如：the west（西面）、the north-east（東北面）、the left（左邊）等等。
8. 放在少數特定國家名稱的前面
例如：the United Kingdom（英國）、the United States（美國）、the United Arab Emirates（阿拉伯聯合大公國）、the Netherland（荷蘭）等等。
