On an especially dull Tuesday evening at 'Rockin' Joe's Diner', Reilly was aimlessly wandering around the tables and wiping them down for what seemed like the hundredth time. He had been working here for almost a year now and could only remember a few occasions where they'd had more than nine customers between Monday and Wednesday. He'd have gone stark crazy if it weren't for the jukebox near the counter. He'd scrub dishes to 'Hound Dog' and mop the floors to 'We are the Champions', putting everything he had into every note. An occasional customer would sometimes drop in during one of his impromptu performances; the younger crowds would request an encore, while the middle age complained about his lack of professional etiquette. Tonight Reilly had chosen 'Dancing Queen'. He danced between tables, sashaying his hips to the beat and humming along to the lyrics. He heard a soft giggle come from behind him.
'You've got some pretty sound moves there.'
Reilly turned around slowly. He was sure that his cheeks must have been the same colour as a beetroot, with the heat rising from his body. Everything about Siobhan seemed to have been drawn back since the last time they'd seen each other. Her hair was pulled into a respectable braid, she had absolutely no makeup on, and was wearing a simple t-shirt and some flared jeans. She was with an older couple, who Reilly assumed were her parents.
'I — uh — could I get you three a table?'
He showed them to one of tables he had just cleaned before rushing to grab them some menus.
'Well, there's a nice change of scenery.'
Aileen — one of Reilly's coworkers — leaned against the counter, gazing over at the group.
'Cute enough for you to stop dancing like a maniac, huh?'
Reilly gave her a weak smile, smoothing down his manic curls. He hadn't been nervous around a girl for a long time, but today his voice box was nothing but a weight in his throat.
'Oh, come on! I guess I'll go and serve them then!'
Aileen grabbed a notepad from her pocket, striding over to the table. Her movements seemed exaggerated compared to her usual sombre attitude. Reilly hated that he'd let her take the table, why had he been such a coward? Siobhan moved her eyes past Aileen, over to where Reilly was still standing, with a weakened smile. The lump in his throat returned.
