Near Atu's home, there was a dusty abandoned church. It seemed to be either a Catholic or a Protestant church, but the words on the stone plaque had become blurry, and she couldn't distinguish the differences between different churches. Although her family and classmates often told her that many people died there decades ago and that it was haunted, it only made her more curious. Moreover, she had vague memories of churches and even a sense of familiarity.
She vaguely remembered when she was very young, living near a church and being surrounded by a group of fully dressed women? Later, she didn't know what happened, but it seemed like bad people came to capture them? Or maybe not capture them, but to steal things. Anyway, she had seen those people in other places several times, and it was never for anything good. She remembered someone firing a gun, which was really scary, but she didn't know if anyone died. They took her and a few other children and ran along the underground tunnel, and then someone helped her find her parents. They moved to a new city, and since then, she had never seen those women again. She always felt that they had saved her life, but her parents never acknowledged it. It was as if they were afraid to bring up what had happened back then, and they even asked her to forget about these things. This made her feel strange and even made her feel that her parents were ungrateful.
She had always wanted to go inside the church near her home and see what it was like. A few days ago, she discovered a hole on the right side of the church, as if someone had smashed it open. She was small enough to crawl in through there. Today happened to be Saturday, and her parents were both working overtime, so she packed a backpack and went there, tiptoeing around the colorful broken glass on the ground and crawling in.
Inside, it was empty, with only a few bookshelves and rows of benches scattered around. The walls had black substances solidified on them, resembling bloodstains. She walked around and started to feel bored when she suddenly noticed a leather folder in a corner. There was a white note attached to it with the words "Father Shu Yi" written on it. She opened it and found several books inside, as well as prayer beads and a crucifix. She took out the books: "Religious Manual," "Psalms"... and one unnamed book that looked like a notebook, with bloodstains on it.
She opened the notebook, and on the first page, it stated that it was a diary belonging to a nun named "Kun," with a few letters inserted inside. A nun? The women in the church she remembered seemed to be called nuns. She found a place to sit down and slowly started reading.
The diary and letters were quite long, and before she could finish reading them, the sun had set. She closed the diary, put it back into the folder, shook her head, and murmured dreamily, "What is truth and what is vanity?" She decided to take the folder with her.
She had heard that there was a Catholic church on the south side of the city. She thought of going there to take a look someday—Atu pondered.
