在這個由無數垂直層級組成的奇幻世界裡，每一層都是一個擁有獨立地平線、獨立天空、與獨自運行太陽的完整小世界。層與層之間沒有高低貴賤的階級之分，只有截然不同的風土人情。這些小世界早已互通往來，透過古老巨大的天際索道、神樹或是不同的科技相互連結

人族少年艾倫生活在垂直軸線最下層名為【灰燼餘韞】的地方。那是一片古老、溫暖的土地，頭頂懸掛著一顆彷彿永遠在黃昏中沉睡的暗紅色寶石也是這一層的太陽。這裡的人族與半獸人建立了溫馨的石造城鎮，過著安穩的生活。雖然各層互通，但因為生活舒適，很少有人願意離開故鄉。
