Chapter 2: The Choice

Aanya didn’t sleep that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again—

the hospital… the machines… her lifeless body.

And that shadow.

“A life… for a life.”

Her hands trembled as she sat on her bed, staring into the darkness of her room.

“This isn’t real,” she whispered. “It can’t be…”

But deep inside, she knew.

It felt real.

Too real.

The next morning, everything looked normal.

The sun rose. People walked the streets. Life continued as if nothing had changed.

But Aanya felt different.

Every person she looked at…

felt like a possibility.

At college, her best friend Meera smiled at her.

“Hey! You look tired. Didn’t sleep?”

Aanya forced a small smile. “Yeah… just thinking too much.”

Meera laughed lightly. “You always do.”

For a moment, everything felt normal again.

Safe.

But then—

Aanya’s mind betrayed her.

What if…?

Her eyes froze on Meera.

If one life can save mine…

“No.” Aanya shook her head quickly, stepping back.

“What happened?” Meera asked, confused.

“Nothing. I just… need some air.”

Aanya rushed outside, her heart pounding violently.

“What am I thinking?” she whispered, gripping her head.

“I can’t do that… I’m not a monster…”

But the fear returned.

Cold. Sharp.

Unforgiving.

You are going to die.

That evening, she couldn’t take it anymore.

Her feet carried her back to the abandoned house.

The door creaked open as if it had been waiting.

The chair stood there.

Silent.

Watching.

“Tell me the truth,” Aanya said, her voice shaking. “Is there another way?”

Silence.

Then slowly…

The air grew cold.

The shadow appeared again, forming behind the chair.

“No.”

Tears filled her eyes. “Why me?”

“Because you chose to sit.”

Her breath broke.

“I don’t want to die…”

The shadow stepped closer.

“Then choose.”

Aanya fell to her knees.

Faces flashed in her mind.

Her parents.

Her friends.

Meera.

“I can’t…” she whispered.

But the shadow didn’t move.

Didn’t care.

“Time is limited.”

Aanya looked up at the chair.

At her fate.

At the terrible truth.

To live…

She had to become the reason someone else dies.

And somewhere deep inside her…

Fear began to turn into something else.

Something darker.
