Chapter 1: The Chair That Knows

The chair was carved in the 1800s by a man no one remembered.

Not his name. Not his face.

Only his work remained… waiting.

It stood in the corner of an abandoned house at the edge of the city. Dust covered everything—except the chair. Its dark wood gleamed as if it were still alive.

People whispered about it.

“It shows your future,” they said.

But they never said what it takes in return.

Aanya didn’t believe in stories.

Not until she stepped into that house.

The air was cold. Too cold for a place untouched for years. Her footsteps echoed as she walked inside, her eyes slowly finding their way to the chair.

It was beautiful.

And wrong.

“Just a chair,” she whispered to herself, even as her heartbeat quickened.

She sat.

At first, nothing happened.

Then—

The room disappeared.

She was standing somewhere else.

A hospital.

The smell of medicine filled the air. Machines beeped softly. Her hands trembled as she looked around—

And then she saw it.

A body lying on the bed.

Pale. Still.

Lifeless.

Her breath caught in her throat as she stepped closer… slowly… unwillingly.

It was her.

Aanya stumbled back, her mind screaming, her chest tightening.

“No… no, this isn’t real…”

But the scene didn’t fade.

Instead, something else appeared.

A shadow.

It stood beside her lifeless body, tall and silent.

And then it spoke—

“This is your future.”

Aanya shook her head violently. “No… change it… I don’t want this!”

The shadow tilted its head.

“It can be changed.”

Hope flickered.

“Tell me how!” she cried.

Silence.

Then—

“A life… for a life.”

The world snapped back.

Aanya fell off the chair, gasping, her hands shaking uncontrollably. The empty house returned, quiet as before.

But she wasn’t the same.

Because now she knew—

She was going to die.

And the only way to live…

Was to choose someone else instead.
