Chapter 23: Echoes of the Dream Sea
Light gradually faded, leaving only a soft blue glow floating in the air. When Xiao Qian opened his eyes again, he found himself not in the laboratory.
Beneath his feet were layers upon layers of water. It wasn't the sea, nor was it a lake. The surface of the water suspended there like a mirror, yet it could ripple gently.
A wind blew from afar, carrying the scent of salt. He looked up and saw a sky without clouds, only a shattered moon—silver-white fragments floating like light falling into a dream.
"This place is..." He murmured softly.
"Your dream." The voice came from behind. He turned around—the man was walking toward him slowly, every step on the water surface turning into light in mid-air. His hair was a mix of moonlight and night mist, and his eyes were rare gold and silver pupils.
It was him—the Master of the Mysterious Island. Unlike the misty phantom before, he was now close enough that every breath could be seen. That presence was both elegant and dangerous. Xiao Qian took a step back, his voice trembling: "Why did you want me to come here?"
The Island Master smiled gently. "Do you really think I am the one who made you come? This is your own choice. When you called out to me, it responded."
He pointed to the obsidian by Xiao Qian’s ear. "But you once longed for someone to understand you. Back then, you were crying alone in a corner of the world. You said—if only someone could see you, even if it were just an illusion."
Xiao Qian froze. His heart twinged. Those were indeed words he had once said unintentionally in a dream. The Island Master’s hand stopped by his hair. "So, I came."
"You should stay here. Here no one will hurt you, there are no lies, and no partings."
Xiao Qian looked up: "But there is no reality here."
The Island Master leaned in, his forehead almost touching Xiao Qian’s: "What is reality? In your eyes, am I not real?" In that moment, the air solidified. Xiao Qian said in a low voice: "You are not human."
The Island Master laughed, but the smile gradually faded. "Perhaps. But I understand loneliness more deeply than you do. Dreams do not lie, Xiao Qian. They are simply—braver than reality."
The light flashed suddenly. Xiao Qian’s body was lifted by a force, plunging into the endless water. The last thing he saw was the Island Master’s finger sliding across the water’s surface, leaving a golden rift behind.
