[Victoria’s Thought]: I thought I knew what fear felt like. I thought fear was a monster with claws or a ship over the horizon. I was wrong. Fear is a tea party where the guests never leave, and the host is a ghost of a man you failed to save.
The Botanical Gardens had been transformed. Giant, mutated roses with jagged, crystalline thorns pulsed with a sickly violet light—the light of the corrupted Cybergem shard. In the center of the "Wonderland" sat Jervis Tetch, perched on a throne of twisted vines.
"Drink up, my Alice! Drink the memory! Drink the regret!" Hatter shrieked, waving a glowing remote.
Victoria was on her knees in the dirt. A metallic, oversized top hat was clamped onto her head, wires burrowing into her temples. Her armor was flickering wildly, changing from green to a dark, bruised purple.
The Nightmare
Inside Victoria's mind, the world was on fire.
She wasn't in Gotham. She was back in the burning ruins of the West Corp lab. She saw her father, Doctor Science, reaching out to her from behind a wall of falling debris.
"You were too late, Victoria," the phantom of her father said, his voice distorted. "You have all the power in the universe, and you couldn't even save me. Why do you keep fighting? Why not just stay here... and let the shadows win?"
[Victoria’s Thought]: He’s right. Every time I win, I lose someone else. I’m not a hero. I’m just a girl holding a sparkler in a hurricane.
The Breach
Suddenly, the burning lab cracked. A silhouette of a bat tore through the wall of fire. It wasn't a monster; it was Barbara. She had used a neural-link from her gauntlet to bridge their minds, fighting the Hatter’s signal from the outside.
[Batgirl’s Thought]: I can see her memories. The loss. The weight of an entire world on her shoulders. It’s too much for a sixteen-year-old. Jervis isn't just controlling her; he’s drowning her in her own grief.
"Victoria! Look at me!" Barbara’s voice echoed through the burning lab. She didn't look like a hero in that moment; she looked like an older sister.
"He's dead because of me," Victoria sobbed, gesturing to her father. "Everything I touch breaks."
"Listen to me," Barbara said, grabbing Victoria’s armored shoulders. "I spent years in a wheelchair because of a man who wanted to prove that one bad day could break anyone. I thought my life was over. I thought the 'Bat' was dead. But you know what I learned?"
Victoria looked up, her eyes wet with digital tears. "What?"
"The trauma doesn't define the hero. The recovery does." Barbara pointed to the glowing Watch on Victoria’s wrist. "That gem doesn't run on regret, Victoria. It runs on your heart. And right now, your heart is the only thing standing between Gotham and a nightmare. Choose to wake up."
The Awakening
Victoria looked at her father’s phantom. She saw the Hatter’s wires weaving through the image. It wasn't her father—it was a cage.
[Victoria’s Thought]: Barbara is right. My father didn't give me this power to mourn him. He gave it to me so I could make sure nobody else had to feel this way.
"I’m not your Alice," Victoria whispered.
She stood up. The burning lab began to dissolve into emerald light. The violet corruption was purged from her mind as she channeled the pure, unyielding energy of the Cybergem.
"And I'm definitely not staying for tea!"
SFX: KRA-BOOOOOM!
Back in the real world, the metal hat on Victoria's head exploded into a thousand pieces of scrap. She rose from the dirt, her armor glowing brighter than it ever had before, the transparent green chest-plate humming with a frequency that shattered the nearby mutated roses.
Hatter fell off his throne, clutching his spectacles in horror. "No! The tea! The etiquette! You've ruined the story!"
Victoria landed next to Batgirl, who was panting, her hand still on her neural-link gauntlet.
"Thanks for the assist, Babs," Victoria said, her voice steady and full of fire. "Now, let's take that shard back and go home."
Batgirl smirked, pulling a pair of weighted Batarangs. "I thought you'd never ask. Let's show him what happens when the 'variables' fight back."
