Chapter XXII: Meltdown, Part 1
Dr. Aoshima makes his way to the geology lab at the Dabih Building in the Capricorn District, his thoughts racing with the implications of his discovery. The crystal he finds on the manipulated person doesn't match any known mineral, intriguing and alarming him with its eerie, unnatural glow. He knows it holds the key to understanding the hooded men's powers or the one that might have manipulated or the one that made most students to succumb into slumber.
Entering the lab, he contrasts the sterile, organized environment with the chaos outside. He places the crystal under a high-powered microscope, adjusting the focus to get a clearer view. The internal structure of the crystal is unlike anything he has seen before, its lattice shimmering with an otherworldly energy.
Dr. Aoshima: "This is fascinating... and dangerous. I need to classify its components and find out how it's being used to manipulate people."
Carefully extracting a tiny shard of the crystal and placing it in a vial, he seals it before heading to the chemistry lab. As he walks through the dimly lit corridors, he reviews the steps he needs to take to analyze the crystal's composition. Lost in thought, he barely notices a hooded figure that appears out of nowhere, bumping into him.
Dr. Aoshima: "Oh, I'm sorry—"
He looks up, but the figure has vanished as quickly as it appeared, leaving Dr. Aoshima puzzled. He quickens his pace, sensing that time is running out.
Meanwhile, in another part of the campus, Principal Kimura and the others find themselves trapped in a cage. The bars glow with a strange energy that prevents them from using their powers to escape. Nakamura, his face twisted with a sinister grin, addresses his men.
Nakamura: "Take control of the machine. Once it's operational, we'll have control over the entire city. Nothing will stand in our way."
His voice echoes in the cavernous room as the hooded men move to obey. Nakamura approaches the cage, peering inside with satisfaction. But his triumph is short-lived. As he turns to inspect the machine, he realizes something is wrong. The control panel is dark, and the machine isn't responding.
Nakamura: "What's going on? Why isn't it working?"
He turns back to the cage, only to find it empty. The bars are bent and twisted, as if something powerful has forced them apart. Panic flashes across his face as he realizes he is alone.
Nakamura: "No... this can't be happening. Where are they?"
Back in the stairwell, Dr. Aoshima hurries up the steps, intent on reaching the chemistry lab. But as he climbs, he begins to notice something strange. The staircases seem to loop endlessly, like a Penrose staircase, an impossible construct that defies the laws of physics. He stops, panting, his heart pounding in his chest.
Dr. Aoshima: "This isn't right... I'm caught in some kind of loop."
Determined to break free, he summons his ability, Force Rebound. Focusing his energy, he unleashes a powerful burst, shattering the illusion. The staircases dissolve into a cascade of light, revealing a darkened corridor ahead. As he moves forward, he sees a humanoid figure, its form shrouded in darkness. The figure has some apparatus hooked on its leg and body, and a purple glow in its eyes. A tint of red is glowing on its apparatuses.
Dr. Aoshima: "Who... or what are you?"
The figure doesn't respond. Instead, it turns and vanishes into the shadows, leaving Dr. Aoshima standing alone, with more questions than answers swirling in his mind.
Dr. Aoshima: "This is getting more complicated by the minute. I need to find out what's going on."
He finally teleports back to the Aquarius District at the chemistry lab of the Albali Building, locking the door behind him as he sets to work. Placing the crystal shard in a spectrometer, he watches as the machine analyzes its composition. The results displayed on the screen are baffling—a mixture of elements that shouldn't exist together in nature, their arrangement defying known scientific principles.
Dr. Aoshima: "This crystal... it's not from our world. It's like nothing I've ever seen."
As he records the data, a sudden noise from outside catches his attention. He peers through the lab's small window, seeing a group of hooded men moving swiftly down the hallway, their destination unclear but their intent obvious. They are searching for something—or someone.
Dr. Aoshima: "I have to warn the others."
Grabbing his notes and the vial containing the crystal shard, he slips out of the lab and makes his way to the rendezvous point where Principal Kimura and the others are supposed to regroup. His mind races with the implications of his discovery. If the crystal's power can be harnessed, it could explain how Nakamura and his followers are able to exert such control.
As he rounds a corner, he sees Principal Kimura and the rest of the team emerging from the shadows. Their faces are grim but resolute.
Dr. Aoshima: "Principal Kimura! I've made a breakthrough. The crystal—it's not from our world. It's the source of their power."
Principal Kimura: "Excellent work, Dr. Aoshima. This confirms our suspicions. We need to find a way to neutralize it."
Suddenly, a loud crash echoes through the corridor as the hooded men burst through a nearby door, their eyes glowing with a malevolent light. The group braces themselves for another battle.
Ryujin: "We're not going down without a fight. Everyone, get ready!"
Dr. Aoshima feels a surge of determination. They have come too far to be defeated now. He tightens his grip on the vial, knowing that the key to their victory lies within the crystal's secrets.
As the hooded men advance, Principal Kimura raises his hand, summoning a barrier of light to protect his team. The attackers crash against it, their dark energy clashing with the principal's radiant power.
Principal Kimura: "Dr. Aoshima, use the crystal's energy against them! It's our only chance."
Dr. Aoshima nods, focusing his mind on the task at hand. Channeling the energy from the crystal, he directs it towards the hooded men. A beam of brilliant light shoots forth, enveloping the attackers in its radiant embrace. The hooded men scream as the light sears through their dark forms, dissipating their energy and revealing their true identities—more students, manipulated and controlled by dark magic.
As the last of the hooded men falls, silence descends on the corridor. The team stands victorious, but the battle is far from over.
Principal Kimura: "We need to find Nakamura and put an end to this. Dr. Aoshima, lead the way. We're counting on you."
With a nod, Dr. Aoshima leads the group towards the heart of the campus, where they know Nakamura will be waiting. The final confrontation is at hand, and with the power of the crystal on their side, they are ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
