The wind whipped through the courtyard, but Isabel barely felt it. Her mind was consumed with the past—Lena's words echoing in her head, "You can never outrun the past." No matter how much she tried to bury those parts of herself, they were clawing their way back.
Then, a voice broke the silence.
"You’re slipping, Isabel."
She didn’t need to turn around to know it was Rose. The queen, the one who had controlled everything up until now. Isabel had been waiting for this moment.
Isabel turned slowly, her voice calm. "Rose."
Rose’s heels clicked against the ground as she closed the distance. "I don’t know who you think you are," she sneered, eyes narrowing. "But I’ve had enough of your little games."
Isabel didn’t flinch. "Is that a threat?"
Rose stepped closer, her voice cold. "Oh, it’s more than that. You either back off, or I make sure everyone knows the real you. You think you're the only one with secrets? I’ll make your life a living hell."
A flicker of doubt flashed in Isabel’s chest, but she quickly suppressed it. "If you think I’m afraid of you, you’re mistaken."
Rose’s lips curled into a dangerous smile. "You should be. You’ve made an enemy of the wrong person."
Isabel stayed silent, meeting Rose’s gaze with a steady stare. "I’m not backing down."
Rose’s smile sharpened. "We’ll see. You’ll regret this." With that, she turned and stalked off, leaving Isabel standing there, the weight of her words hanging in the air.
The next morning, the tension in the school was thick. Isabel knew Rose’s threat was real. The games had escalated, and there was no turning back now.
From the corner of the courtyard, Mark watched her. He had seen the confrontation, and now he could see the worry in her eyes. He approached slowly, his voice low. "You’re playing a dangerous game, Isabel."
She met his gaze, unflinching. "I’m not afraid of her."
Mark’s face softened, but his concern was clear. "You should be. Rose doesn’t let anyone cross her."
Isabel exhaled, her voice hard. "Then she’s going to learn the hard way that I’m not backing down."
Mark hesitated, a flicker of doubt in his eyes. "Just be careful. You’re playing with fire."
Isabel nodded, her resolve unwavering. "I know."
Later that evening, Isabel stood alone in her room, the weight of the situation settling in. Rose wasn’t the only threat she faced. Someone else was pulling the strings, and Isabel could feel it. The storm was just beginning, and she wasn’t ready to back down.
Her phone buzzed, an unknown number flashing across the screen. The message read: "You think you’re in control? You’ve only just begun to feel the burn."
Isabel’s stomach tightened. This was far from over.
