Isabel sat alone in the library, flipping through an old yearbook. A photo caught her eye—Lena. The girl she’d tried to forget. Her heart raced as her hand lingered on the page.
“Lena?” she whispered, dread settling in her chest.
The door creaked open, and there she was—Lena, as confident as ever. Isabel’s pulse quickened, her mind racing. “What are you doing here?”
Lena’s smile was cold, mocking. “I’ve come to finish what we started. You can’t outrun your past, Isabel.”
Isabel stepped back, struggling to keep her composure. “I don’t know what you mean. Leave. Now.”
Lena’s laughter was low and menacing. “You think you’ve buried it all, but it’s still here. Waiting. And when the truth comes, it won’t be pretty.”
Isabel’s chest tightened. “I don’t want to remember.”
Lena’s eyes darkened. “You’re not in control anymore. I’ll be seeing you, Isabel.”
As Lena left, Isabel was left alone, a wave of fear and realization crashing over her. She thought she’d buried the past, but Lena wasn’t done. Not by a long shot.
Later that night, Isabel lay awake, staring at the ceiling. The words Lena had said echoed in her mind: “The truth will come for you.”
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door. She sat up quickly, heart racing. It was Mark, his expression soft with concern. “Isabel? You okay?”
She forced a smile, trying to hide the unease creeping up on her. “Yeah. Just tired.”
Mark didn’t buy it. “Something’s off. You’ve been distant.”
Isabel avoided his gaze, trying to push the fear away. “It’s nothing. Really.”
Mark stepped closer, sensing her resistance. “Isabel, you don’t have to go through this alone.”
Her heart clenched. She couldn’t let him in, not when the past was closing in. “You wouldn’t understand,” she whispered.
But Mark didn’t back down. “I’m here. Whatever it is, you don’t have to face it alone.”
Isabel didn’t answer. She wanted to believe him, but the truth was too heavy to share. She was alone in this, and she always would be.
As Mark left, Isabel’s mind raced. The past she thought was buried was coming for her. And no matter how hard she tried to outrun it, the truth was getting closer.
