I’ve been thinking about how most of life is made up of small negotiations. Not just with other people, but with ourselves. The snooze button. The email we flag but don’t answer. The way we plan to call someone back but it keeps slipping. It’s strange how quickly the unimportant things can fill up a day.
I was at the grocery store yesterday, and a man ahead of me in line had a birthday cake, some paper cups, and two packs of candles. He looked tired, like he was trying to keep something afloat. I wonder if the cake was for his kid or someone who won’t remember the gesture as much as the man will remember buying it. We don’t usually get credit for our quiet efforts. But maybe we’re not meant to.
The world doesn’t pause for much. But we still keep trying to mark time. Birthdays, messages, old photos that pop up in our feeds. It’s funny how we try to freeze things when most of it is better understood in motion.
I haven’t been going back to the usual places lately. Not for any particular reason. Things just feel shifted. I take different routes now. Keeps things fresh, I guess.
Let me know if you ever want a new pen or notebook. I might start stockpiling at this point.
