A figure approaches me. It takes my hand and drags me out of the gym. We ran through the hallways, ignoring the teacher behind us, screaming out my name. The figure drags me into a room and by the smell of faint strawberry smoke, I can tell that we're in the washroom.
The figure let go of my hand and stood by the door. Then we heard knocking, followed by a voice.
"You girls need to leave the washroom," said the voice. It was the female teacher from before. "You can't stay in there forever." The door slightly opened but the figure pushed it back. I put myself against the door to help retain it closed. I could feel the force the teacher put to open the door but the person next to me and I were stronger. I slid down the door and water came flowing out of my eyes.
"She'll stop soon, don't worry alright." whispered the person above me, as she caressed my hair. The sound of her voice felt familiar yet I couldn't get my hands on who it was. She was right though. About 6 minutes later, the back and forth door push came to an end as well as the banging on the door. My tears had stopped falling but the residue of water in my lashes still made it difficult for me to see. The person took my hand and lifted me up from the floor.
"We're leaving the school, okay ? I can help you out of here but you'll have to deal with your folks at home, okay ?" She said and I nodded. She opened the door, did a quick area checking, took my hand and we ran. Without looking back, we dashed out of the school and into a car. I'm assuming it's hers but right now I don't care. As she started the engine, I could see from the mirror, two teachers coming at us. My head was looking back at them as we drove off until they were too far away for me to see.
"Where do you live ?" said the person. I turned my head in her direction before sitting back in my seat. My tears had dried and I was finally able to see who she was.
"Jamie." I spoke.
"You can type your address in my phone," she pointed with her chin to her phone. "Right there."
"Why are you doing this ?"
"What ? What am I doing ? You'd rather have me believe a rumor from Britney and be mean to you for no reason ? I'm not like that, Billie-Lynn. I actually use my brain when I do things. I don't follow people senselessly, no matter who they may be."
I could feel my eyes become tingly again. "Thank you."
"Why would I even listen to Britney ? Out of all people..." She chuckled. We stopped at a red light and she picked up her and handed it to me. "Your address."
"I can't go home now. My parents can't know that I skipped."
"They'll know either way if the school calls them-"
I cut her off. "They don't answer their phones when school calls." The light turns green. She took a left at the intersection and we were driving in silence listening to music. She had similar music taste as me. I didn't bother asking where she was taking us, that was the least of my worries. Anywhere away from school would be fine. She drove into a drive-through. She ordered for her and I and we drove to the counter.
"Here's your order. How you tryna pay today, beautiful ?" said a man at the counter. He was dark skinned and had a flirty grin on his face as he eyed Jamie. She shyly smiled at him before tapping her card.
"Do you know him ?" I asked, noticing their unusual interaction.
"Do I know my boyfriend ? Thank you baby."
"Anything for you, baby." He winked at her. "I'll see you at school tomorrow."
"Bye now." She moved her fingers in an elegant way as a sign of goodbye and drove away.
"He goes to our school ?"
"Mhm"
"What is he doing here ?"
"He called in sick just to get the bag. I would too but my parents would know. Compared to you, they answer when the school calls or emails them." She parked the car in a parking lot where we ate our food and slowly got to know each other.
"What do you want to do now ?" She said, checking the time on her phone. By now, school had already finished.
I lowered my head. "I can go home. I don't want to bother-"
"Wanna go to the mall ?" She proposed, cutting me in my sentence. I lifted my head and a smile grew on my lips.
