poems - Heart of Stone, Heart of Gold

No pulse on your wrist,

no blood in your veins; it's gone, lost,

there can't possibly be any more blood left inside you

as there's so much spilled out around you.

Your heart isn't beating anymore, but it wasn't to begin with -

how could it have been beating

when it was set in stone?

How could you have ever lived,

how could someone so cruel have ever existed?

This is what I say to the jury,

'Their heart isn't beating

and that's why I'm here,

but their heart never beat, not for anyone other than themself,

and that's why i'm here'.

And still, I am punished for the crime

of removing one stone heart

from one cold soul.

is it in a pot at the end of a rainbow?

Is it hidden somewhere behind cruel eyes?

I search desperately,

Yet all along,

They lied,

your heart is not set in gold - but stone.
