A Land of Words, Rhythms, and Emotion - The Exception (Honesty and Deceit)

When I was young,

A friend betrayed me.

She shared my secrets

With the world,

Secrets I’d entrusted to her

And only her.

When I told my mamma

That night at our small family dinner–

It’s just us, now that

Daddy left, and took my brothers with him–

She just nodded sadly,

And hugged me tight.

She wasn’t surprised.

She later told me that

She knew;

Something was off

With that girl–

Always had been.

When I was older,

A boy broke my heart.

He left for another,

And I was left unloved

And unwanted,

Alone and lost.

When he came back,

Begging for my heart once more,

Saying that he was sorry, that he regretted everything,

My mamma glared at the boy

Who’d hurt her baby girl.

But I took him back.

He didn’t leave again,

Not after that first mistake,

And my mamma learned to

Trust him, eventually.

He loved me, and I loved him,

And I knew that my life was complete with him.

My mamma stayed shocked

At his honesty

For the rest of her life.

I thought back to my friend’s betrayal,

How nonplussed mamma had been,

And yet how surprised

When the boy had kept his promise

To love me.

For reasons I may never understand,

Deceit had become the normal

Of my world,

And honesty the surprise,

The exception.
