Kenza’s upstairs in my room waiting on me to talk to my parents while I’m standing outside the living room building up the courage to go talk to them.

After standing there for 3 or so minutes I just walk in. There was no way I was going to get enough courage just standing there, I just had to walk in here to get it over with as soon as I could.

Both my mom and dad are sitting on the couch leaving the chair open for me to sit in. I walk in in-front of them to make sure they notice me and take a seat in the chair. As I sat down both pairs of eyes followed me until I was in my seat then their attention went to the TV they were previously watching.

“So you guys remember how you told me you would take me and Alice up to see Puck after I was all settled in?” I come right out and ask hoping this is the best way to start the conversation.

“What about it Luke?” Mom asks without turning her attention towards me, away from the TV. I couldn’t tell if her tone was annoyance or curiosity.

“Well I was wondering if we could go today. As in Kenza, Alice, and I.” Mom looks away from the TV now but she just looks at me strangely.

I’m about to ask what the look was for but she starts talking before I could. “Kenza knows this Puck guy?” She asks in disbelief. I mentally rolled my eyes at that, she must not have listened to me when I talked about my friends. If she did she would understand what was happening.

“Yes. Kenza is one of my four friends from the coma and so is Puck. We all know each other the same way: the coma.” I don’t understand why my parents are being like they are towards Kenza and me bringing her here. I mean I understand that they might not want me driving but I gave them a choice to drive me and they didn’t stop me from going to her and we’re all just fine now.

“Well if me and her stay up there we’ll need to stay at a hotel or something because Puck’s still in the hospital and then we’d need transportation from the hotel to the hospital. But we only have one car and you guys need that for work…..” I say.

“Well we could give you money for the hotel room, but I don’t know about the transportation thing. What do you think?” Dad asks looking at mom.

“Hmmm. Why don’t you go upstairs while we talk about this and discuss the options?” Mom says to me.

“Yeah, sure.” That went a lot better than I thought it could ever go. I hurry back to my room to tell Kenza what’s going on.

“Well they are being nice, like super nice. We talked about it and so far they said we could go and they would give us money for a hotel room, but right now they’re talking about what to do about transportation back and forth from the hotel and the hospital.” I explain as fast as I can.

“Wow that is nice. I really hope they figure something out! I can’t wait to go!” She says excitedly. “What about Alice coming?”

“Talk to Alice about going where?” I hear someone else ask. I look around and there Alice was standing with the door open. “I was walking by and I heard you say that I wasn’t eavesdropping. I promise.” She says defensively like I was going to yell at her or something.

“It’s okay Alice. You’re fine.” I say trying to calm her down. The way she acted made me wonder if she got accused of eavesdropping before and got in trouble. “We’re talking about going to see Puck.”

“Yes. But we’re trying to make plans and figure some stuff out before we decide on what we’re doing for sure.” Kenza answers her question.

“We’re staying up here while Mom and Dad talk about some stuff so come join us.” I offer her. She comes in and sits on my bed next to Kenza. I join them and lay down behind them while they sit on the edge.

The three of us sat there in silence for a few moments and then Alice threw herself backwards to lay her head on me and sighs. “Ug.” Her head hurt when it hit my stomach. Ignoring me she says “This is boring, lets do something.”

“You’re right Alice. What do you want to do?” Kenza asks also laying her head on me, but gently so it didn’t hurt.

Kenza looked at me with a questioning look, she looked so cute with that face , and I just shrugged my shoulders. I had no clue what she was talking about but it sounded like she liked playing it.

She hurriedly got up and grabbed one of mine and Kenza’s hands pulling us towards her room. Kenza and I sit on the floor while Alice grabbed the toys we would need to play.

“What do you think this game is?” Kenza asks me in a whisper.

Alice sits down and she has barbie dolls and some hot wheels that she sets out on the floor. “Okay so we each pick a barbie and a car to start.” She says.

I just grab a random barbie not paying attention to how it looks and then I find a black car. Kenza grabs a blonde barbie and a green car and Alice has a red-headed barbie and a pink car.

“Okay now we put the barbies on the cars and we race! Whoever wins gets to go shopping and get new clothes for their barbie!” Well this was definitely different than what I was expecting. It wasn’t as boring I expected it to be either.

We played a lot of races, we let Alice win most of them, I won once and Kenza won a few times. It was fun spending time with them and just having fun with Alice.

Around probably our 30th race I heard Dad call my name. I left Kenza and Alice to continue to race while I went downstairs to find out what they had decided on.

They were waiting for me in the living room. “Have a seat, son” Dad says gesturing to the chair I was sitting in previously. I sit and wait for one of them to speak first.

“But, you have to get your license first.” I forgot that I didn’t have license, I had never drove with one before and I forgot that you needed one to drive.

“Done deal.” I say excitedly. “Also when we go up to see Puck could Alice come stay with us on the weekends? I would like to take her with us but she has school so I would bring her back sometime Sunday.”
