VII. The Oak Tree

The land curled inward like a tail,

Reaching into the lake.

The sun pressed heavy on the soil,

Pushing everything with its gravity.

The wet rocks were like fresh paint,

Drying in the summer breeze.

The murky water churned like ink,

Dark, swirling, and clouded.

The ground was like a desert,

Flat, crusted, and cracked.

One tree stood alone,

Standing tall in the barren landscape.

The oak tree, oh, oak tree—

Strong and proud,

Beneath shifting skies of blue and grey,

The sun above the oak,

Its roots in the ground,

Casting shadows that protrude and fade.

The shade stretches,

Over the mosaic of fallen leaves,

Mixed in with pockets of sunlit patches,

Where warmth lingers,

Resting in the shadow's cool.

Oh, the oak tree.
