"Tell me more about your mom, then."

Evan smiled at me. "She's lovely, really. She's the over-protective type, always fussing and making sure we're properly fed."

"She sounds amazing." I meant it. Evan had a huge family, and his closest friend, Michael, had begged them to adopt him after meeting them once. That was back when they were in high school, of course. Now, we were sitting in a coffee shop on our college campus, Evan and I, while he reminisced.

"You must be finding it hard to adjust here. I mean, I know you absolutely had to follow Sarah here, but-"

"It's way more tough than I expected it to be. I especially miss my little brother, Ryan. But, hey, you gotta lose something to gain something, right? I love my girlfriend. What more can I ask for?"

I nodded. I agreed with him, I guess.

The guy had left behind the family he loved, and his hometown, to follow the girl of his dreams. Sarah, the law student. I wondered what was so special about her, that made him give up all that for her.

As I nodded, my eyes strayed to the door, and wonder of wonders, Sarah was at the door. I had spoken to her once or twice, but I didn't know her too well. After all, I'd only become friends with Evan two weeks ago, when we first met in our Econ 101 class.

"Hey man, look who's here." I gestured towards the door, and Evan looked. As soon as he did, the pleasant look on his face vanished. "What the hell?," he said, sounding pissed off. I looked towards Sarah again, trying to figure out what had made him swear, and realised that there had been a guy behind her. A guy whose hand she was now holding.

He got up and walked towards them, presumably to confront Sarah. I paid the bill and walked outside. I couldn't leave though, because I'd given him a ride and I wasn't going to leave him to walk back to the dorms by himself.

Twenty minutes later, he finally came outside and got in the car. I turned down the music and said, quietly, "What now?"

Evan looked straight at me. "I always did like the college in my town. And this shy girl, Debbie, who always used to blush whenever I smiled at her, attends college there. Mom would be glad to have me home. So would Mike, seeing as he calls me around 10 times a day. And I could teach Ryan how to play basketball, just like I promised I would."

I smiled at him. I was pretty sure he'd be all right.
