The night sky glimmered with stars far out of my reach. They flickered like a candle's flame, gently blinking at us. My mother closed her eyes, and grasped my hand firmly.
"I will become a star, and watch over you," she whispered, lacing her fingers with mine. "My beloved daughter, you will never be alone."
She exhaled, and her grip on my hand weakened. I look out the window, and see a star next to the bottom tip of the crescent moon, shining brighter than the rest... it wasn't there before.
I smiled, and it flickered back.
