Soul Search - Staring Adventure In The Eyes

At the age of 2 months,

My first time being punished physically,

My father flicked my arm.

He was frustrated and tired,

At his wit's end, most likely, and readily

waited for my response.

I didn't cry or even pout

But I swiveled around and utterly shocked him

By wordlessly staring,

Not at his hand that flicked me, but in his eyes

Not not pitiful or guilt-struck.

After that,

My parents knew,

I would be

Safe.

It's a habit of mine, really.

I simply make eye contact and don't ever break it

If I'm scared our of my mind.

I won't say a word

My expression won't change in the slightest, and I

Analyze the situation quickly.

My Dad laughs when I

Talk about dating someone mean, rude, and disrespectful,

Just to tease him with the idea,

Saying that a guy wouldn't

Dare treat me like that because I wasn't scared to act against him.

I guess he's right.

I'd stare a dragon strait in the eyes

Just for fun.

Even with friends,

I was with a close classmate after school when some stranger

Walked up to us.

He wasn't all there,

Starting horribly inappropriate conversations with us,

And while my friend looked away, I didn't. I don't know why,

But I stared him

Right in the eyes.

He eventually left.

Later that night, apparently two girls were kidnapped.

It wasn't us, and my friend ended up really shook up.

But I was the only one,

After all,

Who got a good look at him,

And in the eyes.

My Mom is pretty goofy sometimes,

Energetic and spontaneous, like a football hitting the ground,

I like to think I take after her.

Although stubborn and blunt like my father,

I still enjoy a good adventure, I still like being dorky,

And my Mom knows this.

She always makes sure I know

That whatever crazy idea I have swimming around in my head

Is actually important,

And that my sense for discovery

Should always be quenched no matter how insane it may become

Even if it means chasing a sunset for three hours

On a school night.

I was super tired the next morning.

It was worth it.

"Never grow out of that,"

She still says that and I can't forget,

"Even if it means chasing something for a bit."

Though chasing a subject isn't bad for me since I'm so stubborn.

And bullheaded.

But whenever I'm faced

With an amazing opportunity, and I can go wherever,

I go everywhere.

Just because I can,

Just to spite reality and leave it speechless.

And because I want to.
