There’s something I can’t stop writing lately—characters who are saved against their will. Not because they’re damsels, but because they’re the kind of people who won’t stop fighting even when it’s killing them. And I love breaking that.
Picture this: they’re mid-battle, wounded, stubborn, refusing to back down—until someone knocks them out and hauls them to safety. They’re reaching for a self-sacrificial final move when someone else throws themselves into harm’s way first. A portal flares to life, and before they can argue, someone they love shoves them through and slams it shut. They’re left safe, furious, alive.
Even better? They’ve accepted death. They’ve made peace with it. And then—bam. A hand grabs theirs. Someone they thought had already escaped ran back for them.
It’s intimate. It’s infuriating. It’s so, so good.
I think what hits me hardest is the way these moments say: you’re not disposable. Even when the character believes it. Even when they want to take the fall to spare someone else. It’s love, desperation, and stubborn hope rolled into one.
I’ll be building a character around this concept soon. Someone who doesn’t want to be saved—but is anyway, because someone loves them too much not to try.
