The light of the sun woke you up pretty early. Definitely before your alarm. You turned to face Jay. He was still sleeping, full covered with sheets. You tried to wake him up, but every time when you were trying he kept falling asleep again and again.
“Jay, I’m gonna be late for my first day.” he hugged you tight when you wanted to get up from bed.
“Then let’s be late together!” he whispered.
“No, because at least Voight will scream at you, I can lose my job and not have a place to come back to, so get up, take a shower and see you at breakfast.” you got up quickly and almost ran to the kitchen.
“I hate you!” you heard. Soon you saw Jay joining you and taking a cup of coffee.
“No morning shower then?” you asked.
“Without you? No way.” he smiled and kissed the top of your head.
“Well, we should try it sometimes.” you turned to face him and kissed him deeply. After a few seconds, you pulled away. “Maybe we can meet at lunch? I would love to see you after these first few hours.”
“Sure, I’ll text you where and when.” you both continued eating and talking about work and some random stuff.
“We should get going!” you mentioned. After that, Jay walked into the bedroom and took his jacket. You grabbed the keys and you both left the apartment. After a few minutes of driving it was time to go to different places.
“See you soon beautiful.” Jay looked at you and smiled. “Good luck.”
“Thank you handsome. See you.” you left his car and went straight into your new working place.
Soon you were at your desk, trying to figure out how the new system works. Few members from your area, showed you everything in the building, how everything is working, but this was just… too new. Half of them didn’t know that new facial recognition even exist, so when you have left there alone with the task “learn how to use it, start programming” you were kinda terrified.
“Hey Y/N, how’s work going?” your coworker sat next to you.
“Great. I mean, not mentioning this whole system. I don’t even know why they gave us this when it’s not finished.”
“Yeah, you’re right. But to be honest, it’s part of the job, you need to deal with it, this happens a lot!” he explained.
“Well, that means I need to start learning more, anyway thank you.” you smiled at him.
The day got pretty intense, you couldn’t catch up with any of your colleagues, so till you were meeting up with Jay, you were alone.
“Meet me at 12pm, the same place as always.” you saw a text from him. You checked up the hour and realized that you were 15 minutes late. You didn’t want him to worry so you decided to call him in your car.
“Hey, I’m so sorry, I didn’t see your message. I’m heading out and I’ll see you in 5 if you are still there!” you explained.
“Don’t worry, I’m still here. Just wish you could be here sooner because I really wanted to talk to you about a new case.”
“Uh babe, we’ll talk soon, I need to hang up now.”
“Okay, be safe. I love you.”
You arrived after more than 5 minutes, because of a traffic jam. You noticed Jay sitting alone at your favorite spot.
“Hey, did you order anything?” you asked while you kissed his cheek.
“Yes, just a few minutes ago.” he smiled.
“Good, now talk, I want to know everything.”
“This morning I had a call with active shooting and possible robbery. When I got there, I found 3 kids. Two of them are dead. We have only one video from camera footage, but we can’t see anything from it, no matches in the system, so it’s a kinda cold case. We can’t prove anything besides it was about drugs, we even don’t have any fingerprints cause so many people were there before.” you could notice tears welling up in his eyes. You took his hand and stroked it softly.
“Hey, you’re here with me. It’s okay not to be okay Jay and you know it. I know it can be hard, but trust me, I know you. You’ll do everything you can to catch this guy and make him die in prison.”
“Thank you for this Y/N. I’m really glad that I know you.”
“Jay, you can tell me everything and I’ll always try to help you.”
“I didn’t ask how’s your first day?” he smiled back when you said these words to him.
“It doesn’t matter now, we can talk about it later. Let’s eat something and enjoy this time okay?”
“Sure. I love you so much.”
“I love you more!” you said.
Time passed by, you were so deep in conversation when Jay stood up pulling out his phone.
“Voight needs me, he said that we need to check something. See you at home babe, have a good day.”
“You too, see you.” he kissed you deeply and left the restaurant. You paid and got to work too.
You were at work after 20 minutes, but it was still too late to stop your colleague from doing the wrong thing he could do.
“Hey, we just have the first people using the new facial recognition system!” he said.
“Yeah? And who’s that?”
“Check it, the guy who probably killed two kids for drugs…” you couldn’t hear the rest of his words. Everything clicked in one second.
“Wait, who used this system?”
“Sergeant Voight.”
“You kidding right?” you asked.
“No, why?”
“Oh my god, you know that’s not finished, that we shouldn’t use it. Who showed up from this program?”
“Marcus West.” he showed his picture and pieces of information about him.
“The code was written by white engineers who designed it around predominantly white facial features and tested it on their white friends, so it’s less precise if you’re black. Darker your skin, the worse the problem gets. And you’re telling me that you just showed this to cops? To catch a guy? When it’ll be done in like a year? Oh god, I need to call Jay.”
“Jay? He was there too.”
“I know, that’s why I need to stop him before he’ll do something he’ll regret, thanks to you.” you tried to reach him 4 times and still nothing. Time was the only thing that mattered. “I’m going to 21st, I need to tell them.”
You drove as fast as you could, probably crossing red light a few times. When you got there, Trudy stood behind her desk, of course, you went to her.
“Hey Trudy, I’m so sorry to bother you, but it’s an emergency, I need to see Voight.”
“Something happened? Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, I mean sort of. Do I need to warn them before they’ll arrest Marcus West? I think that’s his name.”
“You’re a little too late, patrol just got him up. He’s in the interrogation room with Jay!” she answered.
“That’s even worse, please can you buzz me up?”
“Yeah, of course.”
You almost ran upstairs. You greeted with everything quickly and rushed to Voight’s office.
“Sergeant? Hi, I’m so sorry for bothering you but I need to talk to you and Jay.”
“Y/N, hi. Is everything okay? Jay is with a suspect now.” he answered.
“That’s why I’m here. You’ve got the wrong guy!” you said.
“What are you talking about?”
“This facial recognition is not done yet, we shouldn’t use it yet.”
“Son of a bitch.” Hank went to the hall where the interrogation room was. You followed him.
“Jay, come here for a sec!” he said after opening the doors.
“But sergent-”
“Now Jay.” you looked up and saw him, staring at you confused.
“What are you doing here? We are supposed to meet at home.” he hugged you.
“It’s not the time babe. You need to let Marcus go, he’s not your guy.”
“What? How could you know that?”
“Facial recognition is not done yet, it’s not him Jay.”
Hours passed by, and you were finally at home, cuddling with Jay after this whole messy day.
“I love you, you know that right?” he broke the silence.
“Of course, I love you even more.” you kissed his cheek.
“I mean, if you wouldn’t stop me, I would get this man killed. He wouldn’t survive in prison.”
“But you didn’t. He’s at home, with his family, just the same as you. That matters.”
“You’re right. My badass.” he laughed and kissed you deeply
