【5分鐘輕鬆讀一篇，翻譯員帶你遨遊文字與文化的精彩世界！】

Read between the lines，意為「看出字裡行間的意思；瞭解言外之意；聽懂弦外之音」。

追溯到古希臘時代，為了傳達某一不想讓別人知道的訊息，往往使用隱形墨水將該訊息寫在一般的信件中，收信人必須將羊皮紙加熱或塗上溶液才能看到隱藏的訊息，因而有了「read between the lines」的說法，漸漸於 1800 年代中期變成現今的成語意思。

日文的說法叫「行間を読む」，即是自行領悟筆者在字裡行間隱藏的意思。
