I looked into the mirror and a large pair of brown eyes was staring back at me. What makes a monster? I wondered. Faking smiles among strangers and feigning ignorance. A few weeks ago, I was walking on the busy street and was hurrying back home from work. I passed by a small alley and saw an elderly woman scavenging for food. Rain was falling down in sheets of droplets of water. My vision blurred for a second. If I have stopped a moment, even for a mere couple of seconds and offered assistance. Or perhaps passed her my umbrella or a few pieces of notes. I would have been more humane. Was I a monster? I might be one. Still the guilt that creeped in each day reminded me to show more love to others, to give without expecting anything in return, and be less like a monster.
