二十多天後，他突然感覺不到橄欖的位置，又見自己已在森林邊緣，決定先返回文明世界。

到了有手機訊號的地方後，才知悉母親在他出發後不久，全身肌肉及骨頭都非常痛楚，像是被烈火灼燒，又會突然抽搐，情緒極差。

他趕到醫院，母親已被惡疾折磨到不似人形。但母親見到他，已心滿意足，在兒子見証下，進行安樂死。
