在古代，夜晚燈火不通況之下，若是下雨可就麻煩了。江戶時期，日本出現了許多自帶鬼火的妖怪，提燈小僧通常會在雨天或凌晨霧氣重的時候出現，提著燈籠到處遊走在街上。
