"Lucas, you've had two weeks to come up with a new plan to get a restock and you've come up with nothing. Let's just go with my original plan. You know it'll work!"
"I just have a bad feeling about this, Ri."
"Well, I also want to see Kora again, you know it's been six months since we've heard from her. I need to know that she's okay," I whisper more to myself but I know he heard me.
Lucas sighs and shakes his head, "as much as I hate this plan, it's the only one we've got."
I perk up from the couch I'm sitting on but quickly narrow my eyes, "what's the catch?"
"Hmm, no catch, Ri. If you want to do this so badly, then I'm not going to stop you."
"Okay, I'll go pack my bags and inform the city," I say as I get up and leave the room before he could change his mind.
--
"You've got everything you need?" Lucas says as he leans against the doorframe of my room.
"I think so," I respond while double checking my luggage again.
"You know, it's not too late to change your mind."
"I need to do this, Luc. You can't be the only one to keep risking your life for us. You're my friend, I need to be able to help while I can."
A knock on the door alerts us that the officer who will be escorting me to the neighboring town is waiting for me.
I take a deep breath in before I whisper, "show time."
Lucas opens the front door, and to our surprise, we see Officer Monroe.
"Oh, don't look at me like that," he says with a smirk on his face. Of all the officers on the rotation, Monroe is our least favorite human. He's egotistical and convinced that we're supernatural beings. He tries his best to prove it by doing underhanded things like dousing a needle with garlic to prove that we're vampires. What he doesn't know is that the whole garlic thing was made up by vampires as a red herring to throw humans off of what our real weakness is. Suffice to say, it worked in our favor.
"Be careful," Lucas whispers to me as my hands begin to shake. I'm really hoping Monroe doesn't try anything on the way to the next town. Of all the human officers, he's the one that scares me the most. There's just something about him that rubs me the wrong way and I can't put my finger on why that is. I need this trip to run as smoothly as possible.
I say goodbye to Lucas and follow Monroe to his car. Monroe takes my bag so that he can search it as per protocol. Once he's satisfied, he places it in the trunk.
"Papers," he says smugly.
I roll my eyes at him as I hand him my papers, he looks over them, nods and hands them back to me.
"Get in, it'll take us about two hours to get there."
Just fucking great. Two damn hours in a car with him. If it were anyone else, I wouldn't have minded, but to be stuck in close proximity to this moron; kill me now.
--
After Monroe dropped me off at my hotel, I decided to make a quick visit to Kora. It's been too long since I last heard from her. The only thing I have is an address that she gave us two years ago. I'm really hoping she'll be there. I've been really worried.
I manage to find the apartment building that she should be living in but it looks run down and unlivable. It looks like the rioters got to this place too, but I'm not sure how long ago that was which worries me even more. Where the hell is she?
I see someone exit the building, "excuse me!" I shout to get her attention, "what happened here?"
"What does it look like, lady?" she says sarcastically before walking off to who knows where.189Please respect copyright.PENANACUgCZ4u4oE
I walk around the neighborhood to find something familiar. Before Kora left, we came up with a plan to leave something behind in the event that we have to leave in a hurry - a clue to find each other again. I stop at a park with a water feature at its midpoint, staring at the water fountain, I feel a pair of eyes on me. Not to raise suspicion, I walk toward a bench closest to it, as I sit down I scan my surroundings. I'm deep in thought when I feel arms around my neck, before I can pull away a white cloth covers my mouth, I try to fight my way out of my assailants reach but it's too late, I smell silver in the cloth and quickly lose consciousness. 189Please respect copyright.PENANA51CMJWMvXj
