“Well, there go our brave teens! Now, you are probably wondering, ‘Why on Scallanos are we sending a bunch of kids to Earth?’ Well, friends, here is the answer. We are tired of only eating vegetables and fruits! We are sending those “children” to find a recipe, a recipe that will change our world! We are sending those teenagers to find the one known surviving recipe of the impossible burger and fries! The whole burger, bun and all! Do you want a burger?”
As a cheer rises up from the mob, I realize we are about to risk our lives for something we could very easily live without. I turn to the team and think they must have come to the same conclusion. Constellation is opening and closing her mouth like she wants to say something but decides against it.
Nova is practically shouting when she says, “What? We are going to an uninvestigated planet populated by aliens?! For a BURGER?”
Meteor, leaving my side, confronts her. “Do you think I knew? Or Aster? Uh… I mean... Asteroid, that is…”
“HAH! Meteor, can I talk to you for a sec?” Star orates. From the smirk on his face, I’m guessing it’s guy stuff, whatever that is. After they go to the boy’s quarters, I turn to Nova.
“I assure you, I had no idea what we were going for. I thought it would be nuclear launch codes or something, but definitely not a burger recipe. Anyway, we can’t back out now. We are aboard the Orion, after all.”
“Yeah. Right. Whatever.” She storms off to her room in the girl’s quarters.
After a few minutes, the boys and Nova come racing out of the televator.
“Are we taking off?” I query, as I feel a rumble beneath me. “Oh. Spoke too soon.”
Meteor slips up next to me and mumbles, “We should get to the bridge and buckle up.”
“Oh! You’re so right! Come on Team Tektite, to the bridge!” We all rush into the televator and, within milliseconds, we materialize at the entrance to the bridge. After we are all seated and have our space harnesses attached, I call Comet on the holoscreen.
“Team Tektite is aboard the Orion, have affixed our harnesses, and are ready to take off!”
I hear my mother’s voice on the loudspeakers. “Team Tektite, good luck on Earth.” I realize I’m wearing the boots she gave me and choke back a sob.
“Goodbye Mom.” It’s all I can say without crying like a baby. Meteor reaches out and takes my hand.
“You’ll see her soon. I promise,” He whispers. That’s when my shoes’ invisibility feature kicks in. It’s also when I start weeping. Luckily, my boots also make me silent, so the team can’t hear me cry. Underneath my imperceptible feet, the ship starts to rumble. Before I know it, Team Tektite and the Orion are flashing through the cold expanse of unexplored deep space.
