Jason searched through the halls for ten minutes, hoping to find that gorgeous girl. That teacher must have meant a lot to her. The way her face froze. That hardened look in her eye. It made Jason worry that she was too unstable to walk. He didn’t want her to hurt herself. He felt a cold pain in his stomach. He needed to find her. Jason ran down the halls, turning corner after corner. Where? Where? Where did she go? Where did she GO? Jason turned around a corner. Where did she-
A girl with light blonde hair that fell down to her waist walked slowly down the hall. Her head was tilted down so Jason could see that she stared at the floor. He inched closer, wondering how she would react if he talked to her. She continued to walk down the hall. Clearly, still in shock. Jason could see her tremble slightly from where he was. He touched the corner of the wall with his fingers, trying to see if that girl was alright.
Then suddenly her legs collapsed from under her. Jason felt a rush of fear as she fell onto the floor. Her knees hit the carpet and she started sobbing. Her cries were so quiet, but Jason could still hear them. She leaned forward and rested her forehead on her knees. Her body shook and trembled as she sobbed softly in her leggings.
Jason walked over to the girl. He settled down onto the scratchy carpet, lightly placing his hand on her back. Her head shot up at the feeling of his warm hand. Her bright blue eyes darkened with depression, but there was a shine as tears burned her eyes. The girl had an unreadable expression, but he knew she was wondering why he followed her.
Jason took his hand away. “I just thought you didn’t want to be alone.” He felt a rush of guilt for surprising her. He hoped she wasn’t scared of him.
“I didn’t want to be alone….” She murmured. She was just too afraid to ask for help. She looked down at her knees. Tears streamed down her cheeks and dripped off her chin. She hated showing people her weakness… because it was her true self.
“I know we just met,” Jason stated, “but you can talk to me if you want.” He saw her tears splash onto her leggings, soaking up the fabric.
“I just feel like I’m cursed….” The girl whispered. Embarrassment bled into her chest when she realized she was about to pour all of her problems on a boy she just met. “Oh god… never mind….”
“It’s okay,” Jason said, “you can talk to me.” He just wanted her to feel better. Loss was terrible. Grief was terrible. He knew that talking was one of the ways to help people heal. He desperately wanted her to help herself. She didn’t seem like the type of person who cared about herself. She needed to talk.
“No… I’m fine….” She whispered sadly.
Jason’s heart shattered at the soft, quiet, sorrow in her tone. She was shutting down… That’s not good… “What’s your name?” Jason asked. He thought if she wasn’t going to talk about why she was sad, then maybe he can at least start a conversation to distract her.
She sniffled. “Lily.”
“I like that name,” Jason commented. “It’s beautiful and it suits you.”
A soft smile started forming on Lily’s lips. Wait… did he actually get her to smile? “Thank you.” She said softly. She loved her name as well. Her mother chose it. Lily loved her mother. She loved her so much. She and her mother would get along really well. They never fought. It was abnormal for a teenager to not fight with their parents. So, Lily just accepted that her relationships were abnormal.
Oh my god… Jason just made her smile with one compliment. That’s wonderful. It meant that Lily had some good memories too. Really good ones. He must’ve triggered one with that compliment.
