I ran after her, looking for where she went. I heard a door open behind me and I whirled around. She had ducked into the girls’ bathroom.
“Come ON, the girls’ bathroom?!” I exclaimed.
I didn’t remember her at all. How did she expect me to know who she was when I’ve only known her for a day?
I banged on the door. “Kira, can we just talk?”
She opened the door and took me by the arm. She dragged me to the janitor’s closet and shut the door.
“Kira, I . . .”
She rested her hand on my arm and I felt a large tingle run up my body, like a lightning strike.
Visions filled my head. I found myself walking in a dream where two little kids were giggling outside a principal’s office.
“When’s he gonna go in?” asked the little girl.
“Just wait, he’s about to close the door.”
There was a CLUNK and a SPLATTER and the two kids burst out laughing.
“What?” I muttered.
The dream changed and I found myself in my own house, my mom standing in front of me.
The two kids ran into the house all hot and sweaty.
“Here are your popsicles, guys,” she said.
“Ewww!!” the little girl said. “Is your sister home yet?”
BEEP BEEP!
“C’mon!!” the little boy said. “We can throw these at her boyfriend.”
They ran off, giggling as my mom watched them with a warm smile on her face.
Another dream appeared. This time, it was snowy and freezing. The two kids were building a snowman.
“Let’s make it a snowwoman,” the little girl said. “Like Captain Marvel!”49Please respect copyright.PENANAFTRDr82yiJ
“And she can wipe out everyone else’s snowmen with her blasty powers!!”
“And she’s a pilot!!”
“And she has cool hair!!”
“We should name her . . . Frosty the Snowwoman.”
“Whatever you want.”
The little girl giggled and threw a snowball at him. He threw one back and they started a snowball fight.
One final dream appeared.
The two kids were sitting next to each other. They looked much older now. The girl was crying. “They’re getting a divorce!” she sobbed.
The boy hugged her. His voice much deeper now, he said, “It’ll be okay. I’m here for you.”
“You promise we’ll be best friends no matter what happens?”
He took her hand. “I promise.”
I looked at the two kids in disbelief. The boy was . . . me. The girl looked a lot like Kira.
I came to my senses.
“Kira!” I cried. “Where have you been all this time?”
Her eyes welled up with tears. “You remember me?”
I nodded. I remembered her!
We hugged each other tightly.
“How did I forget you?”
Kira’s face turned sour. “My dad didn’t like you. He wiped me from your mind. I just brought me back into your brain.”
I couldn’t believe what she had said. “WIPED ME FROM YOUR MIND?!” I shouted. “Your family is POWERPASSED?!”
“Shhh!!” She clamped her hand over my mouth. “Please don’t tell anyone.”
“I swear I won’t,” I promised.
“I missed you so much, Harley.” She hugged me again and I hugged her back.
“I love you, Kira,” I told her. “I’ll never forget you ever again.”49Please respect copyright.PENANACHLsmFSDCQ
