當一個人彌留之際，天使與魔鬼便會出現，他們會根據將死之人，以過去生平所做的一切，去決定究竟要死亡還是繼續留在人世，當雙方協調好之後，就會釐定一個死亡的日子和時間，接著安排接那個往生了的靈魂到陰間。但當雙方都有理據，爭持不下的情況下，這個時候，便需要出現『生死調解員』。
