Elly pulled the draw open. It squeaked on its wheels. She took out the hoodie and slipped it on. Then she walked over to the mirror - a daily occurrence that often didn't end well. She gazed into the black lacey mirror, her reflection stared back. She pulled her sleeves down so that her fingers were covered by a blanket of black. Her reflection stayed still. The panda on her jumper winked.
"I need to take my medicine.." She sighed. She usually only took it once every other day but yesterday's had already worn off. That was not a great way to end the week.
Elly shuffled out of her room. The walls of her bedroom were grey with black and white polaroids covering the wall above her bed. Her bed had a black metal frame making it blend into the rest of her room.
Elly liked to blend in.
On her bedside table there was an angel and a Buddha statue. When she was younger, whenever people lifted her up, she immediately sat as if she was a Buddha.
Elly often thought of her old family.
Next to the statues was a canvas. This canvas was her life. The design was simple, a pair of wings, one white, one black. Her mother once told her something she will never forget: "There is no truth in this world Elly; and neither are there any lies."
She had spent many a sleepless night wondering what she had meant. I'll probably never find out, She thought.
Downstairs, Elly greeted Mrs Grande in the kitchen. Since she had 'returned', mum had had her mouth stretched into a permanent grin. The corners of her lips matched up to the corners of her eyes. Needless to say, she could no longer speak. Elly was the only one that could see her mum, until she took her medication, then she was just like everyone else. She pulled out a chair and pulled it half-heartedly along the kitchen floor. She pushed it against the cupboards and stood boldly on it. Mrs Grande tilted her head, half confused, half shocked at what she was doing. Elly never voluntarily took her medicine. Had she done something wrong?
Mrs Grande continued to smile. It was almost as if her grin was stretching wider and wider.
She didn't look very friendly...
Elly grasped around on the cupboard, her thin, pale fingers felt for the pills. They weren't there so she strutted upstairs into her dad's room.
"Dad?" She half whispered pushing open the door.
Her dad was still asleep on the chair, he had a relaxed air around him, she decided not to awake him and continue her search for the pills.
After looking for a further 15 minutes, she decided to summon the courage to ask Ally. Ally was her elder sister who was the first to think of the adoption theory. The summer before her Sophomore year, Elly and her sister had been stuck inside because of the rain. Listening to the rain hit the glass panes, they sat on the porch.
Their favourite game when they had been younger was families. However the older they got, the more the game changed. Before, it had been a happy game with the two girls taking turns to be the 'baby' or the 'mummy'. The time they played it however, Ally was the adopted girl who cut and Elly was the happy sister. They didn't realise how truthful that was. Now they are convinced that one of them are adopted since Ally has long blond hair with sparkling blue eyes, she isn't as pretty as the 'popular' girls especially ____ but she managed (quite easily) to have a small group of semi-popular friends who were like her new family. She'd changed since she had left middle school and now Elly had grown half afraid of her, their year when one was in middle school, the other in high school and made them grow each other out.
Elly took a deep breath, stood up straight and walked confidently across the hall and into her sister's room, without knocking. She tried to act as if she had purposely not knocked but truthfully she was just too scared. She closed to the white, wooden door behind her and tiptoed around the room looking for the pills. The walls were a pale blue with white curtains and white flooring. A small bunk in the four poster bed rolled over and a half skinny hand groped for their phone.
She'd woken up Ally.
Cautiously, she headed to the wardrobe and slipped inside, carefully closing the door behind her. The wardrobe was pitch black - she didn't dare turn on the light - except for a flickering red light light in the corner; fire. Elly forced her way over to the light.
The pills were there, they were on fire but they were still there, she let out a sigh of relief. Popping one into her mouth, she felt the world go silent. Mrs Grande was gone and so was the fire. It was just Ally, Elly and her dad. As well as a billions of other strangers I'm the world. As much as she tried, Elly would never be alone.
Elly contemplated a way out. She could hear Ally getting out of bed and knew she would be coming her way pretty soon. She knew Ally's morning routine. She had only 2 minutes before she came out of the bathroom.285Please respect copyright.PENANAKOiARfDBKM
Stumbling out of the cupboard, she acted fast. She dive bombed over the bed and landed in a giggling heap on the over side. She hadn't giggled in ages yet found that she couldn't stop herself. Ally had still been in bed and was now screaming at Elly. She tried to imagine how silly she had looked - a fourteen year old girl charging out if the wardrobe, diving over the bed and laughing on the floor. Clearly her sister had realised this as she had now joined her.
It felt as if their happy family had been reunited, even if it was only temporarily.285Please respect copyright.PENANAhOmbgQZSUh
