摩西是大約主前1500~1400年的人物，而本書內容所描述的時間，大約自主前4000年至主前1700年，前後共約二千三百年。摩西如何能知道在他多年以前的歷史呢？當是根據於他在西乃山上和曠野間從神那裏所得的啟示和曉諭(參徒七37~38)。
