The Cabin

Tucked away at the bottom of a garden

Lies a small wooden sanctuary.

Where time stands still and undisturbed

And obligations wait their turn.

Until my visit ends and I take my leave

And return to the real world.

I follow the familiar gravel path

Worn down with my previous visits.

Bathed in the yellow and cyan blue

Of a bright and welcomed afternoon.

And at its end there stands the entrance

Where a friend comes into view.

A spacious room of homely oddity

Built of mismatched furniture.

Dispersed like strands of conversation

Placed in random, dotted stations.

I greet my friend and I take my place

In events soon put to motion.

Then as afternoon begins to recede

The evening makes its entrance.

Food is shared and drinks are made

And music starts us on our way.

As reds and pinks sift through the trees

And the sun vacates its stage.

Time flashes by like careless friends.

Drinks fuel our dialogue and wits.

Debate and laughter come with ease

Carried by a whispering breeze.

And the evening colours darken and twist

To a rich purple and navy.

In huddled coats we head outside

Greeted by the winking stars.

We signal them with our own light

As lighters briefly burst to life.

And cigarette smoke and conversation

Bloom up in the night.

The sky soon turns to an endless black

And on we go, my friend and I.

The conversations grow more softened,

Friendly words are raised and offered.

And the clink of drinks and a cigarette's glow

Are all that can be seen and heard.

Eventually the night sky is met

With a tinge of morning's pink.

This means our time is at an end

And off we stumble to our beds.

And there to sleep I finally sink

Content with time well spent.
