明朝後期土地兼併的現象非常嚴重，權貴階層仗著自己的權勢，從底層農民手中巧取豪奪，強佔土地。 這就產生了一個很可怕的後果。 首先是權貴階層可以通過各種特權，免於向國家繳稅，而農民失地之後又無稅可繳，所以國家財政收入大幅減少。 為了彌補財政上的漏洞，朝廷只好通過強硬手段給下面增派收稅任務，可是權貴階層依然有辦法通過各種手段偷稅漏稅，結果就是朝廷的收稅任務全部攤派到了無權無勢的普通農民 身上，原本已不堪重負的普通農民，生活又變得更加困苦。 這就使得社會矛盾進一步激化，最終演變成星火燎原的農民起義軍。
